Summary: While the world waits for an iPad announcement, the DirecTV App for iPad mobile app is ready for the taking.

While the world waits for an iPad announcement, the DirecTV App for iPad mobile app is ready for the taking.

Much like the TiVo Premiere app, iPad users will be able to fully control their compatible DirecTV boxes directly from that 9.7-inch touch screen.

Along with being able to channel surf, set recordings and search listings for up to 14 days in advance, users can look up extra information related to the cast and crew of a particular program, set parental controls, access sports scores and more.

For full remote control service, users will need one of the following Internet-enabled DirecTV Plus HD DVR models: HR20, HR21, HR22, HR23, HR24 and H21, H23, H24. Most other Plus DVR boxes and even TiVo Series 2 receivers will permit remote scheduling.

The DirecTV app for the iPad is now available for free from iTunes. DirecTV access, of course, is sold separately.

I?m not excited about something that turns a 500$ iPad into a remote. If DirecTV wants their customers to get amped, they should refer them to dish.com to learn about TV Everywhere. As a DISH customer and employee I've been using it for months to watch live and recorded DVR events on tablets, smartphones, and laptops anywhere I can get a 3G connection.
