For anyone that has already nabbed an HTC Droid Incredible, there could be good news on the horizon as Boy Genius Report says that an Android 2.2 update will be available for that specific smartphone shortly.

Based on a tip, BGR says the Droid Incredible will be getting Froyo as soon as the end of July or early August. No specific dates yet. Plenty of other updates are supposedly on the way as well, including 720p video recording mode and support for 802.11n Wi-Fi.

This could possibly seriously increase demand for the Droid Incredible as well as amp up the competition between this smartphone and the Android 2.1-powered Droid X and even the Droid 2 when released.

Except there are plenty of consumers still waiting to get their hands on a Droid Incredible. Demand for the HTC smartphone has been high since its release in May, and there is still a delay on supply due to the ever-pressing OLED shortage.

RE: Droid Incredible could be getting Android 2.2 Froyo upgrade soon

That's great, everyone else gets upgrades while us Motorola Cliq owners keep waiting for them to roll out the long promised Android 2.1 upgrade.
I wouldn't place much stock in that rumor. It's only been 3 weeks since Froyo was released and HTC isn't known for quickly rolling out Android updates. And then there's the fact that HTC said this; http://www.techtechies.com/20100707/technology-news/htc-android-2-2-froyo-release-dates-announced-htc-desire-getting-froyo-first.html
Well I would not hold your breath.
If its anything like updating the HTC Hero, first it was coming at the end of 2009, then Jan, then March, then May, and it finally started showing its head at the end of June, and for orange customers in the UK, it still hasn't been released.
Ive just given up, and rooted my phone, so i can actually get the update, (the being able to mess around with your phone is also a definite plus).

I find HTC sense UI really good, but HTC's firmware update time is ridiculous, if they just said, 'it will be out when its ready', that would be fine, but they keep saying 'its out in a month' when it wont be.
@willt1984@...

If you can remember the Sidekick fiasco last year, you can understand why HTC and the phone companies take the conservative approach.

One point to consider.

is that the Droid brand is owned by Verizon. Although Motorola and HTC are manufacturing these devices, VZW is running the Droid show. So, I wonder if Verizon is going to further muddy the Droid waters by allowing these various devices to recieve 2.2 at different times. Does Verizon really want 3, 4, 5 or more Droid devices in its showrooms running 2 or 3 different versions of the Android OS? I don't think so. I believe Verizon is going to hold things up so that all, or at least all shipping, Droid devices get 2.2 at the same time.

Motorola Droid

I agree that verizon may be holding up the deployment of Froyo, as they are riding a popular crest wave right now and a stumble would be disaster. I do hope that my Motorola Droid will be updated soon too. I know many want the IPhone on Verizon, but I think Verizon don't need the IPhone so I would be content to not have it on Verizon. I suspect that Verizon will be better off with it's variety that it offers now. On the other hand, Apple needs Verizon, but I doubt that Apple would ever admit that.
@david@... It seems that Apple may need Verizon. But Verizon sure doesn't need Apple. Just look at all the trouble Apple has caused for AT&T. Do you think Verizon wants any of that? Hell no.
Why do the wireless carriers have to gauge people to get those high priced everything plans just to have a newer better phone and the wireless carriers are taking forever than sunday to upgrade all service areas.
