FireWire isn't so obsolete yet after all. The 1394 Trade Association is boasting that two billion FireWire ports have already been shipped and implemented worldwide.

The Association, which is "dedicated to the advancement of the IEEE 1394 (FireWire) standard," naturally asserts that "estimates the total of 1394-equipped devices will increase" this year. Unfortunately, no specific numbers or estimates have been provided.

Additional future plans include a step-up to 1.6 Gb/s bandwidth, but hasn't USB 3.0 already beaten them to the punch?

    What's FireWire???

    • It's an apple invention

So details and historical significance is unsurprisingly left out of the article.

But it's impact is massive. Thanks Apple and friends

And how many USB ports have shipped? If IEEE 1394 (firewire is just Apple marketing speek) hadn't been so grossly overpriced at the start, it could have ended up being the major player not USB.

Apparently there are around 2 billion ports that are not being used. Used to use it for video transfer, no need anymore.

If Apple drops it as a standard, it will disappear. FireWire owes its success to Apple. Apple already dropped FireWire on its MacBook's. Will other models follow suit? Only Steve Jobs knows.

Recently I had to buy a Windows laptop, and surveyed about 40 or 45 systems. Not one of them supported Firewire. On the other hand, my four year old Fujitsu laptop has a Firewire port.

  • Firewire is minimally used on a Wintel PC

I've been in the tech industry for 25 years and maybe used a 1394 (firewire) port for 1 hour. In contrast, I've used USB ports for hundreds of hours. Drop 1394 and give me eSATA or USB 3.0 going forwards.
