Foxconn factory explosion in iPad 2 building, 2 killed and 16 injured

By | May 20, 2011, 3:16pm PDT

Summary: Foxconn, the factory that manufactures many of the gadgets in the world, was rocked by a huge explosion in the building where iPad 2s are assembled. Cause of the accident is still unknown but 2 deaths and 16 injuries have been confirmed.

The Foxconn factory in Chengdu, China was rocked by a huge explosion at around 7 pm local time. According to a CCTV reporter on the scene and reported by MIC Gadgets, the explosion and ensuing fire occurred inside the building where iPad 2s are manufactured.

A Foxconn spokesperson has confirmed to Gizmodo that two workers were killed and 16 others were injured:

We can confirm that at approximately 7 pm on May 20, there was an explosion at our Chengdu campus. At this point, we can also confirm that there were two fatalities with injuries to 16 other employees. We are working with medical officials to provide treatment to the injured employees and we are working with government and law enforcement officials to contact the families of all employees affected by this tragedy.

The situation has been brought under control by the fire department and the cause of this explosion is being investigated by local police officials. Foxconn is cooperating fully with that investigation.

Production has been suspended at the site of the explosion until the completion of the investigation. The safety of our employees is our highest priority and we will do whatever is required to determine and address the cause of this tragic accident.

21st Century Business Herald (via Google Translate) is reporting that the security staff believed the thick smoke was toxic and that the explosion was caused by “super-light dust”, but there is no official word on the cause of the explosion from Foxconn.

There were apparently hundreds of workers inside the A05 iPad 2 building at the time of the accident so we hope casualty was limited to just those 18 people confirmed by Foxconn. It takes an unfortunate accident such as this to remind us that real people put their lives at risk every day to make us the shiny toys that we crave. Understandably, production for the iPad 2 has been halted to allow officials to investigate the cause of this accident and ensure the safety of the workers.

Foxconn deaths keep mounting
Uralbas Updated - 20th May 2011
and they all happen at iPad/iPhone/iPod facilities.

It can't be denied anymore. Otherwise someone's hands will end up being stained in red as Foxconn's

This is worse than child labor exploitation done by other companies in India. There will be no way avoiding being held accountable if Foxconn is the supplier.

May I ask, how many more deaths will it take before something more than PR show and parades in the case of Foxconn.

As of this year 17 suicides there (Google: 1 Million Workers. 90 Million iPhones. 17 Suicides). 2 in this accident. Total is now 19 at least, and the tally keeps on counting.

@Uralbas Not to make light of any deaths, but 17 suicides per year in a population of one million is actually quite low. It is far lower than, for example, the average in the United States, which is 111 per million people.

OK, you hate Apple, but try not to sell garbage with your hatred.
@Uralbas I suppose scaled dynamics, who are working on commercial spaceflight, and whose engine manufacturing accident killed 16 people, is evil too? Working at a factory is dangerous. Unfortunately, there is litte anyone can do to change the fact that building things can get dangerous. It doesnt mean foxconn is a mass murderer. They deserve scrutiny, yes, but these people know what theyre getting into.
@Uralbas Hating on Apple much? As mentioned above the stats are quite low comparatively. This is also a factory where accidents are more likely to happen.
@Uralbas: these facilities were also manufacturing goods for other American and Japanese companies. You might remember that the likes of Nintendo launched their investigations on what was happening with suicides, not only Apple.

@Uralbas
I agree with you, but are you matching rates of a million employed workers in China to that of a million unemployed workers in the US?

And China is not known for being "open" about many things, so are we sure the numbers are accurate?

Not only Apple use Foxconn
jorwell Updated - 21st May 2011
@d_tisdal@...

My cheapest, operating system free system that money can buy also starts by displaying Foxconn in big letters before Linux starts booting.

However Apple products seem very expensive for what is basically a fancy front end on BSD Unix so maybe they should be giving more of the profits back to the people who actually manufacturer the things.
@jorwell Having used linux for two years as my main os before switching to a mac, there is real valuein having apple develop drivers and attracting developers. Its not just fancy BSD... Its a fancy BSD environment that people actually write software for.

I can't imagine what would cause this... I imagine there are things that are flamable there but an explosion... Wow, that is crazy scary stuff there.
@Peter Perry manufacturing is a dangerous process. You are dealing with toxic and flamable components in large quantities.
@facebook@...

It was probably a dust explosion. With a lot of dust in the air, explosions can be extremely powerful due to the large amount of combustible surface area.
@Peter Perry
Standard industrial grade chemical solvents will explode in the presence of a building fire environment. A chemical fire is a dangerous event.
@Peter Perry It may be something to do with the manufacturing of capacitive indium powder, with which the surface of touch screens are impregnated to allow them to hold a charge across the surface. I dont know for sure though; its just a hunch.
@nickswift498 I think those are manufactured in Japan but I could be wrong.
@peter perry Like I said... Its a hunch
@Peter Perry

I can't remember where I heard this but I think I remember a news story that dust can spontaneously combust and create a fire or explosion. I seem to remember some kind of warehouse or manufacturing facility having an explosion in the US a while ago. As pristine as their Apple products are shipped out, I wouldn't expect a ground level accumulation but perhaps they didn't clean areas up high. I hope they take care of the families of the victims. I'm sure their coworkers are quite traumatized as well.
@Bookmark71

Any combustive dust suspended in the air at the right concentrations can cause very, very large explosions. A good example of this is Dust explosions in grain silo's (Americans call em elevators). This is often caused by poor ventilation in a facility. There have been a number of Silo Dust explosions due to poor ventilation design. The US ones are best documented if your interested.
@thorpete1

Americans call those grain silos too.
@Bookmark71 Certain types of Dust yes but not typical household dust as that stuff settles.
shutdown long enough to do an investigation? Getting ipads out the door is priority one. Making sure this doesnt happen again is priority two. While we all feel bad for them I have no doubt that the incalcuably cold and heartless company that apple has proven time and again that it is has already had someone here place the call to upper management at the factory and reminded them that their weekly quotas still stand and that there is no shortage of replacements willing to show up to work tomorrow morning. Really a shame that apple has decided to bank all those billions in profit instead of use it to create jobs at home in the US where unemployment is still very high and the economy could really use a boost. How much is enough Steve? Are you getting close yet? You already have more than you and your family and several generations downstream could ever spend in their lifetimes. Want to keep those jobs out of the country where you can hide the working conditions and save on safety until you have a couple dozen more sports cars and finish your next mansion? That way you'll look really flashy as you whiz by all the out of work, dying to get a job locals as you tool around town livin la vida SJ...

The official news says nothing about the iPad. Yet, somehow unprofessional idiots post the info like it was fact.

I think is because if people found out that the building was manufacturing an XBox or Dell PC or HP component nobody would care.
@wackoae I think you need to do a little more research, most news articles are claiming it was the iPad 2 plant... Some are even speculating about shortage fears.

I didn't know so many were so gullible!
grillomalta 20th May 2011
How can so many people be so idiotic? FOXCONN is the industry leading maker of PCB connectors, screens and sockets.

ALL PC motherboards, I repeat, ALL motherboards use foxconn connectors for VGA, Serial, USB, Parallel, Keyboard, Mouse adapters... you name it, Foxconn has high quality and good standards.

We use Foxconn exclusively here at work (microcontrolled relays and motor starters)...

The fact that it happened at an iPad building was either coincidence, or perhaps, even sabotage... why not?

Finally, I am so sorry for the deaths and injuries...

@grillomalta
of PCB connectors and sockets.
@grillomalta The fact that it happened at that Plant was probably due to the fact that Apple's product is in higher production right now than most other things they manufacture.

Either way, it is irrelevant, ZDNet wasn't knocking apple for this, this is their politically correct way of saying, "Oh no, the iPad is going to see a delay in manufacturing!"

Censorship?
@randycpu I still see the video. Maybe it was down temporarily? I don't think its geoblocked if I can see it here in the states.
So many of the comments here are blind to the social and cultural and political factors that intertwine to create circumstances where accidents like this happen. Factories needn't be dangerous- that is why unions were organized by workers in the West and forced rich owners to improve working and safety conditions. When the people do not have a say (unions are by definition democratic organizations for the protection of workers), the rich and powerfull will treat them as disposable commodities. In China, where I live, this happens all too often. Why? Because the government will not allow the formation of unions, factories will do everything in their power to prevent their formation as well.

And western companies like Apple are all happy with it as well because they can pay the lowest possible salary to workers and make massive profits who are reaped by the shareholders. Neo-liberals, sadly far too many of whom are American, for some reason believe that unions are somehow anti-american or anti-democratic, applaude this system, while turing a blind eye to the rapidly increasing USA rich-poor gap and rapid decline of the middle class.

When you start treating everything and everything like a commodity, people start losing their humanity, respect for others, and self respect. Then everything becomes about trying to gain advantage over others and maximizing one's benefits. Truly the road to a polarized, sick society.

If you read about the history of labour, it is apparent that unions and workers organizations massively improved the labour conditions for countless millions and allowed the West to develop its economy in a way that allowed a dignfied life for its workers. In China, the workers to do have a dignified life. The entire life is controlled by the company. They are not allowed to talk about certain things (anything bad about the company), not allowed to date, the times they wake up and go to bed are dictated by the company. Essentially they are similar to slaves, but receive a minimum amount of money for their entire day. Meanwhile, Apple and its stockholders get rich, and everyone loves the gadgets which serve to anesthetized us to the fact that we should care about something more important -- like our society; like how to build just societies where people have safe employment and stable incomes, and access to affordable medical care and education.

Capitalist systems encourages the commodification of everything- the most horrible of which is the commodification of humans. Luckily for us in the much of the West, this destructive process is mitigated by the presense of organizations like labour unions, and civil society groups. In China, these do not exist, so all we have is pure capitalism, treating workers like disposable rubbish, represssing them whenever it leads to higher profits. Please put aside your right-wing neo-liberal blinders and do some reading about this.
