Gateway is starting the day off beautifully with a trio of super slim and very sleek HD LED displays for us to gaze at until we just can't take the brightness any longer.

What we have here are two FHX series models (the 21.5-inch FHX2152L and 24-inch FHX2402L) and the 23-inch FHD2303L monitor (pictured above).

Each of these HD Gateway monitors serve up a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, a 12,000,000:1 contrast ratio, a 16:9 aspect ratio, 250 cd/m2 brightness and 16.7 million colors. The Energy Star-certified screens also have a touch of green with white LED backlighting that delivers up to 68% in power savings. Oh, and the packaging is recyclable, but you could have guessed that one.

The differences are minimal. For example, the FHX models offer 2ms response times, whereas the FHD2303L boasts a response time of 5ms. The latter one also sports a transparent frame to make it look like the display is actually floating on your desk. Spooky.

Everyone gets VGA and DVI ports, but the two larger displays (the FHD2303L and the FHX2402L) also get some HDMI action.

All three of these Gateway displays will launch this month. Pricing starts at $189.99 for the FHX2152L, and then jumps to $249.99 for both the FHD2303L and FHX2402L screens.

  • RE: Gateway rolls out trio of HD LED displays; starts at $189.99

About ten months ago, I tested several of the currently available LCD monitors in this price range because I had to replace one of the dual CRT monitors that I use for my graphics work. Without exception, the screen brightness varied by 1/2 to 2/3 of an f-stop from the bottom of the screen to the top. This variation is unacceptable for serious color matching and photography uses. It will be interesting to test these new monitors to see if they are an improvement over a calibrated CRT monitor.

Good LED monitors have zones of LEDs. Whether these can be adjusted for calibration by the user remains to be seen. A nit meter or other device would seem to be necessary.
