AT&T is rolling out Android Gingerbread to all its Froyo-running (2.2) smartphones introduced this year, beginning with the Motorola Atrix 4G today. Updates will be delivered over-the-air (OTA) where possible, but may require a Wi-Fi connection or download to PC due to file large file sizes.

Handsets that will be updated to Gingerbread are as follows:

  • HTC Inspire 4G: Coming in August, via Wi-Fi only
  • LG Phoenix
  • Motorola ATRIX 4G: Starting July 25; Update will update allow the users to download applications from third-party stores.
  • Pantech Crossover
  • Samsung Captivate 4G
  • Samsung Infuse 4G

According to the press release, Gingerbread offers:

  • User interface refinements
  • Refined copy/paste functionality and speed enhancements
  • Improved power management that offers a more active role in managing applications
  • Improved on-screen keyboard with multi-touch support that makes typing faster and more accurate

I can't wait to see how my Infuse will improve with Gingerbread, whenever that update is available.

This just in: AT&T just releases iOS 4 for it's 2011 iPhones. Wouldn't that be a silly headline. ;)

See? This is why AT&T needs to buy t-mobile, because they can't put out gingerbread on time. Clearly AT&T isn't competitive as it is so it should gobble up the rest of the wireless industry. -___- FTC, why you no sue yet?

I'd be happy about this IF the phone I bought my wife last December, the Motorola Flipside, were getting updated from Android 2.1!! Hey, AT&T, where's MY upgrade?

My only "good" news is that this phone is scheduled to be upgraded sometime this year to Android 2.2. Yes, last year's OS....

Let me add how disappointed I was to find out that with Android 2.1 the downloaded apps MUST install on the phone's internal memory and can't use the SDHC card. Then I found at that the AT&T crapware uses almost all the available internal memory and it can't be uninstalled without rooting the phone.

I'm keeping an eye on how well the "new" Windows Phone update process goes with Mango. If Microsoft can manage to take AT&T out of the equation, I just might try a Windows Phone. Well, that's IF Nokia can get a Windows Phone out the door soon....

I think you should try a Windows Phone anyway. I own one and it's a great phone. You'll have 30 days to take it back.

I already got Gingerbread on my Atrix 4g last week officially from AT&T. Gingerbread is definitely good thing. It didn't crash my phone in these 4 days of operation. But on the otherhand Gingerbread update on the Sprint Galaxy Tab crashed it three times during the last 3 days and sadly they all have to do with google search.

  • My 3G Captive(ate) won't get this

I finally got a microcell from AT&T so now I can actually USE my phone in my house, but the long wait to Froyo was Samsung's fault as well as AT&T. My company is issuing me an iPhone so I have to sip the Apple juice, will see whether it behaves better than the Galaxy/Captivate

@Common+Sense Yes my phone is as good as a pager when it's at home because I get no usable reception. I sometimes can't even send SMSes...what is this 1999?<br>--gloria

Android 4 (or what ever they call it.. ) will be out in November time-frame, the same time Mango is supposed to ship on the new Nokia phones.
With this new android OS, you will see better phone integration, as Google is supposed to be limiting the phone makers to what they can add to each phone, and so hopefully avoiding the rampant crashes that the OS experiences.
The phone interface is supposed to be changing too ... no more phone buttons (Home, Back, Menu ..). These will part of the OS so there will be some placement standardization across the board.
This new OS is supposed to be a convergence of both Phone and Tablet, making it easier to program for down the road, much like iOS ...
As Mango will be trying to play catch up, Android and iOS will be pushing forward with new possibilities ...
Don't get me wrong .. MS WP7 (or what ever the new name will be) looks promising, but they will have to get it right this time or be trampled by the opposition/completion !!

I have a HTC Desire HD (with Gingerbread 2.3.3)
My son has a iPhone 3G (Latest iOS)
And Yes we both argue about which OS is better ... I don't always win !!
