New Jersey Governor Chris Christie announced on Wednesday that NJ Transit is now supporting Google's contact-less payment system Google Wallet. NJ Transit is the first public transportation agency to join up with Google and the third largest in the United States. So the move is a big deal.

Starting today, transit riders will be able to buy tickets at both New York’s Penn Station and Newark Liberty International Airport Rail Station, in addition select bus routes.

The announcement comes a day after Google announced partnerships with seven new retailers. Joining a small number of Walgreens and Subway locations are Foot Locker, Guess, OfficeMax, The Container Store, Toys”R”Us, American Eagle Outfitters, and Jamba Juice.

While these moves are big for Google Wallet, the program's success currently hinges on how long it takes Google to add Wallet support for non-Nexus S 4G devices. After all, what good are massive partnerships without a wide variety of device support?

It's a great move for us NJers, but like the article says, the phones that support Google Wallet are too few to really make it worth it yet.
