Hands-on review: Targus Versavu cover and stand for iPad 2

Summary: Even though the tablet itself was only released in March, there are plenty of iPad 2 protective cases to choose from already. Targus is hoping to stand out from the crowd with the Versavu 360-degree cover and stand. Here’s the hands-on review.

Even though the tablet itself was only released in March, there are plenty of iPad 2 protective cases to choose from already. Targus is hoping to stand out from the crowd with the Versavu 360-degree rotating cover and stand.  Here’s the hands-on review.

USE

This Targus case is a rather sturdy portfolio. There is only one uncovered spot on the entire case, which can be seen in the side image, to reveal the signature Apple logo.

When opened up, the case reveals a cloth-lined panel on one side that not only helps prevent scratches and such on the 9.7-inch color display, but also hosts pair of ridges for propping the iPad 2 up. (More on that below.)

On the opposite side is a plastic fitted frame designed specifically for the iPad 2. The tablet clips in here rather easily. It is also designed to rotate 360 degrees so that users can easily toggle between landscape and portrait mode whenever they like. However, I found that while the iPad 2 does stay locked in when used carefully, it’s not exactly bolted in. Thus, if you spin too fast, you might find your iPad flying through the air, which is definitely not good.

Speaking of toggling between viewing angles, that’s where the fitted ridges come back into play. The case doubles as a stand, making it very useful for watching videos when propped up on that table attached to the seat in front of you on an airplane. When I tried it out with my own iPad 2, I found the stand to be sturdy and reliable enough. No wobbling at all. Of course, you still want to be somewhat gentle with the iPad and the stand as nothing is perfect, but this stand would help out when users want to watch videos, conduct presentations or just do some browsing and work without having to hold the device.

AVAILABILITY

The Targus Versavu cover and stand for the iPad 2 is available now for $59.99. Certainly pricey for an iPad 2 case, but it’s perfect for business travelers with its sophisticated exterior, strong protective exterior and dual functionality.
