HP: webOS tablet launching in Q1 2011

Hewlett-Packard is trying to move on from the Mark Hurd scandal, starting off with the news that the expected webOS tablet computer should be launching early next year.

According to Engadget, Personal Systems Group VP Todd Bradley announced to employees that the new project, dubbed “Hurricane,” will be debuted in the first quarter of 2011.

Since HP bought Palm earlier this year, many have wondered what kind of projects would emerge from the merger. Hurd had previously said that smartphones wouldn’t be on the agenda (although that could change with new leadership), and HP has already laid plans for a slew of tablets. A webOS tablet targeted towards consumers has been in the pipeline for some time now, and it shouldn’t conflict with plans for the business-minded HP Slate.

Up until now, the timelines (especially regarding the webOS model) have been blurry, but this sounds like the perfect time to go public with a new product - either to maximize the amount of press coverage or turn it towards something more positive. Or both.

HP is smart to use Web OS for Tablet rather than for smartphones as i think that Tablet is an exponentially growing market, much more interesting and less risky for starters (and restarters like Microsoft).
Unfortunately for Microsoft it seems to be the opposite.
Windows Phone 7 U.I is better taylored for tablet than for Smartphones, thus it would have been smarter and more interesting for Microsoft to build tablets based on this O.S than smartphones.
Alas Balmer seems to have such a lack of vision that one wonder how he has enabled the development and the release of Windows 7.

Don't think it will do well.

What's sad is that WebOS itself is really great. The UI (particularly it's multitasking functionality) is hands down the best in the smart phone market. However, with Palm sitting on only 2 rather unpopular phones for over a year with no hint at a new product, HP saying they don't have an interest in the smart phone market with only promises of a tablet some time down the road, I think developer support has kind of faded to a trickle. Without this developer support the HP WebOS tablet could be DOA.

I guess we will find out.

I loved WebOS. I am using an Evo now. Have had a Windows mobile phone as well. WebOS was hands down, the best. I can't imagine why HP would have spent the money for Palm and then killed WebOS. My dream phone would be something similar to the Evo with WebOS. I would pay a lot of money for that combo. I have no interest in a tablet.
