Yesterday we got a sneak peek at the new HP/Palm webOS tablets, and those slates might start shipping as soon as March.

According to DigiTimes and its unnamed sources (so take this with a bit of caution),

The development of WebOS tablet PCs was finished in 2010, but HP will have Taiwan-based Inventec begin ODM production and shipments in March 2011 to allow for software testing and timing of launch schedules in line with market development.

In the leaked documents and images yesterday, signs pointed towards a mass market launch plan starting in July. Presumably this sooner launch schedule could be for developers, etc. Or maybe not. We'll know more on February 9.

Price, weight and battery-life. And does it require a telco contract? If those things are as good as the iPad, it might have a ghost of a chance. If not, nope.

  • HP/Palm tablets

HP is the only reason Palm is still alive, I think if they go after the lower price market, with a decent product like the tablet etc. HP/Palm could survive for a long time.

I compare it to HP's digital cameras, not the best, but there affordable and they work pretty good.

  • If it has an SD slot, I'm buying one.

The thing that has kept me away from iPad is the difficulty of loading and managing stuff through iTunes only. My wife bought a Color Nook, inserted a microSD card that had her favorite music and PDF books on it, and she was off an running in minutes.

Funny, I did the same thing with iTunes and iPhoto. Inserted an SD card and was off and running in minutes.

  • I've Been Buying Palm Products For Years...

And I love the ease of use, the versatility and flexability of both the devices, and the applications. I really miss the stylus control of the "pilot" and centro type devices.
Funny (but not really) how Palm's Pre, which was release long before many of the current iPhones, had more hardware and software features than the subsequent iPhones. And with a few software upgrades, I got video and much more.
And, I love the fact that I don't have to wear pimp monkey pants, to have pockets big enough to carry my phone.
I look forward to seeing what the HP/Palm tablet holds in store. I'm guessing that it will be substantially more than apple's.

    • Problem ... this is no longer a Palm product

@Steve@... It is now an HP product and HP has a history of screwing up good products after acquisition.

I've enjoyed my Palm Pre over the last 15 months, but seriously -- the webOS tablet was ready to ship sometime in 2010 but HP is considering actually shipping it in July 2011 so they can see how the market develops? That sounds to me like their waiting to see if the Apple Tablet 2.0 will kick their ass really badly, and if so they'll scrap the webOS tablet and try and pretend it never happened.
