Huawei announces the Honor, a smartphone with a three-day battery life

Summary: Huawei's latest phone may not be the most powerful, but with its three-day battery life, it's still pretty compelling.

Not long after its announcement of the Impulse 4G, Huawei is officially taking the lid off of the Huawei Honor. Running Android 2.3.5, the Honor features a 1.4GHz processor, 32GB of storage, and a disappointing 512MB of RAM. Most interesting, Huawei says that the Honor's 1,900mAh battery can last for up to three days on a single charge. That's no small claim.

There's not much to remark upon about the device's exterior. Featuring a 4-inch WVGA (480 x 800 pixel) touchscreen, the Honor looks remarkably like a number of Samsung's devices, not to mention the iPhone.

There is no word just yet on a release date for North America, but if you live in China, Asia-Pacific, Russia, or the Middle East, you can get the Honor when it launches later this year.

Here are the official details:

  • Android Gingerbread 2.3.5 OS

I love that we can now call 512 MB of memory in a device the size of your hand "disappointing"

*Stares at two desktops still in his room with 128 and 512 MB of RAM*

  • Last up to 3 days on a single charge? My iPhone could do that

If I didn't use my iPhone for anything, I bet it could last 3 days on a single charge.

So now the question is: how much are you allowed to use the Honor before it will last less than 3 days? Can you literally play 72 hours of video? Can you play Angry Birds for 72 hours straight?

I doubt it.

So what does it mean to last 3 days on a single charge?

Nothing.

Edit: I just checked Apple's site and the iPhone gets up to 300 hours standby time. 300 hours is 12.5 days.

So the iPhone lasts up to 12.5 days on a single charge.

@toddybottom And yet, my 4th generation iPod Touch barely lasts a weekend on standby.

      • So?

What does that have to do with anything?

My point is that saying something will last "3" days on a single charge doesn't actually tell me anything if there is no indication about how that device is being used. Apple does it right here. They give you a couple scenarios. The iPod Touch should be able to play music for 40 hours and video for 7 hours on a single charge. That tells me something. It isn't perfect but it is better than the following 2 meaningless statements:
The Honor lasts 3 days on a single charge.
The iPhone lasts 12.5 days on a single charge.

In other words, I have been given absolutely no indication about how good the Honor's battery life actually is. In fact, it sounds like the Honor's battery life is quite poor since I bet most Android phones can last more than 3 days on standby. Yup, just looked. Motorola Droid: 11.25 days. Samsung Galaxy S: 31.25 days.

So claiming that the Honor lasts 3 days is a totally garbage claim. It is meaningless.

  • Why Do We Still Use mAh instead of Ah?

Why not just say "1.9Ah" instead of "1900mAh"? So much simpler to deal with smaller numbers, don't you think?
