Multiple (unnamed) sources are coming forth and spreading some news sure to bring holiday cheer to some: the iPad 2 is on its way with a pair of built-in cameras.

As reported by Reuters,

Component suppliers for Apple Inc's iPad are gearing up for a new round of production in the first quarter, sources said on Friday, with one saying the product will be a revamp of the popular tablet computer including front- and back-mounted cameras.

Reuters also acknowledges the fact that Apple is known to make announcements around the first month of the year naturally as it fell in line with Macworld. Last year, the iPad was unveiled on January 27. It was just seem plain weird if Apple didn't announce something big next month.

Reports have already swirled earlier this week about 400,000 to 600,000 units of the second-gen iPad shipping within the next three months.

  • A front mounted camera makes sense on a tablet

For the same reason a front mounted camera makes sense on a laptop: video conferencing. But a back mounted camera? On a 10" device?

Okay family, hold still while I whip out my 10" iPad to take a family picture. Smile! Wow, this thing is heavy and wobbly. Let me get the tripod, it is the only way I can take good pictures with this 10" device.

    Ridiculous.

@NonZealot if you are video conferencing on the iPad and want to show something to the people on the conference, wouldn't it make sense to be able to do a dual-camera layout, maybe the iPad will have split-screen for conferencing.

Makes all the sense in the world.

    • Heavy?

Maybe you should spend sometime at the gym, instead of wasting all your time with your obsessive compulsive disorder over all things Apple.

@cyberspammer2 How about coming up with something more original than duplicating my account Trickytom3/Sonofasailor?

@NonZealot Actually, a heavier camera is easier to hold steady. IMHO.

      • So when is your new camera design coming out?

        @Feldwebel Wolfenstool
You know, the one with a 10" screen and no place to hold it? :)

Heavy didn't fully capture the image I was describing. The iPad is exactly the wrong combination of heavy and awkward. It is a TERRIBLE design for taking pictures.

Apple has had a lot of bad ideas. This ranks amongst them.

The only good that may come from a second generation IPAD might be that the 1st ones may come back down to earth in price so that those of us in the 10 an hour and under might share in the fun.
