Apple has posted a tiny tidbit of shipping news to the iPad product page. Those who have pre-ordered their shiny tablet computers before this weekend should still be getting the iPad in the mail by April 12.

But new pre-orders will start shipping later now. Oh, no!

From now on, Wi-Fi models are promised to be shipped by April 12, whereas the Wi-Fi + 3G editions won't be shipped until "late April" - and it doesn't get any more specific than that.

The delay is a result of the fact that demand exceeded product production, and now Apple doesn't have enough iPads that are ready for April 3. Given that new pre-order shipments are being delayed now, it will be curious to see how many iPads Apple will have in-store on the launch date.

A few extra weeks to wait isn't that terrible, but maybe a bit disappointing...unless you were really planning iPad showing up in early April. What are you going to do with all that extra time on your hands now?

• Apple's Effort to Squash iPad Critics Reaches New Low

Apple is such an insecure company it apparently paid off the copyright owners of the film Downfall (famous for the Hitler rant used in all the Hitler meme videos) to issue a copyright take-down notice for the video ?Hitler Responds to the iPad,? the YouTube sensation that garnered almost 3 million hits in its first week and was the #1 comedy video for the month of January. Hundreds of Hitler meme videos using this same clip are currently on YouTube and have been for years, but for some reason (wink) the copyright owner, Constantin Film AG, issued its first ever copyright take-down notice for ?Hitler Responds to the iPad? and YouTube took it down.

• And your point was?

Hitler is not funny, period. Apple and any other company that cares about
good taste will be quick to disrupt brand defamation. Not many would
want Hitler, Stalin or even Saddam being associated with their child, or
even your pets.

Well for Apple, iPad is a new born baby.

• Tell that to Mel Brooks

He's made Hitler funny several times-the cafeteria sequence in Blazing
Saddles "they lose me right after the bunker scene", "Hitler on Ice" in
History of the World pt. 1, ALL of The Producers ("Springtime
for Hitler and Germany" still kills me) and To Be Or Not To Be (must
see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu2NqfISm9k ). So yeah, as a
human Adolf Hitler is an epic failure, as comedic fodder for Mel Brooks,
pure gold!

What, have they been getting manufacturing/marketing strategies from Sony? This sounds like the crap Sony pulled with PS2/PS3. Let's only make a few units, then brag about how fast we sold out. You had to know the hardcore Apple fanbase was going to rush out and get these! The only reason this won't bite them in the ass is because there isn't a competitive unit out there to make them pay for coming up short on manufacturing (the way the Wii rocketed past Sony in the last round of home consoles).

• Welcome to the moron chorus

Yet another of the identical moronic comments about the Apple fan base
causing the success of Apple's consumer products. You do realize that
the VAST majority of iPhone and iPod owners are Windows users, right?

That said, I think one can be reasonably safe in assuming that the
production numbers well-exceed the installed "Apple fan base."

Not surprising then that your analysis of the market strategy of Sony v
Nintendo is equally as idiotic.

Apple has for decades undercalled/miscalled the initial demand for their new products. This has been so consistent that I can only assume it is intentional. As to the "lucky break" that the iPad has no real competition, that is a consistent theme as well. Funny thing - competitors eventually do show up, but never exactly wipe them out, do they? Lucky thing, indeed! :)

• Consistent themes

"Apple has for decades undercalled/miscalled the initial demand for their
new products. This has been so consistent that I can only assume it is
intentional."

Care to cite examples?
SpiritusInMachina
• Decades? Are you sure you want to pluralize that?

The iPod wasn't undercalled; Apple's sales didn't skyrocket until
Windows users had a copy of iTunes, at which point it seemed everyone
wanted an iPod. Still, what few naysayers were out there said the iPod
wouldn't succeed because Creative, etc., already had digital music
players on the market. Weren't they surprised?

The iPhone was a surprise to everyone, including AT&T. Apple figured
on a certain first-week level based on a lot of the pundits that said
Apple shouldn't even try. They figured having a few hundred thousand
available would cover well enough to get a feel for the demand. Of
course, the pundits were again wrong, and the demand ran far higher
than anyone expected.

The iPhone 3G was a repeat of the original, not because of the pundits,
but because Apple figured the market was already filling up. What with
2-year contracts, the 3G needed to appeal to new customers--they
didn't expect existing customers to line up as well.

3G(S)? Well, who woulda thunk? Demand is running away and even
enterprise customers are beginning to buy in. What happened to all
those pundits that said Apple didn't stand a chance?

Now we come up to the iPad. Apple figures for 1.5million units on
opening day--about what the iPhones each did in the first week. They
decide to get a feel for the market by opening up orders a couple
weeks ahead of release, and Holy Cow! Half a million already ordered
or reserved? We've still got to stock the stores!

The point is, trying to estimate an opening day demand is almost
impossible. Almost nothing carries the kind of demand that Apple's
products do. Almost nothing generates the kind of lines for opening
day unless it's one heck of a movie like Star Wars, Harry Potter or Lord
of the Rings. Who knew that a mere electronic gadget could elicit that
kind of demand?

When has anyone lined up for anything Microsoft, Dell, HP, Panasonic,
Sony, etc... has released? Apple is breaking new ground with each
release. It's no wonder they can't keep up.

• Tablet computer?

To call iPad a "tablet computer" is overly generous

An iPhone with a hyperactive thyroid, an internet surfing appliance, a media device, an overly large ebook - but hardly a tablet computer
archangel9999
• How so?

"An iPhone with a hyperactive thyroid, an internet surfing appliance, a
media device, an overly large ebook - but hardly a tablet computer"

And how, pray tell, do you suppose those functions are implemented?
Considering the fact that the device will also run iWork, and that thus its
capabilities far surpass most machines from the 80s to early 90s, I
assume that means that you are claiming that the first personal
computer debuted with the first pentium and PowerPC systems.
