Is this the Motorola Droid 2?

Summary: Is this the next Motorola Droid? According to a new report, the next-generation device

Is this the next Motorola Droid?

The folks at Droid Life say it is.

According to the photos, the next-generation Motorola Droid device will tweak, rather than overhaul, the milestone Google Android device.

That means visuals remain almost identical. A few exceptions: a raised-button keyboard reminiscent of Motorola’s Cliq that drops the original model’s gold directional pad, and a smoothed-out version of the original model’s “chin.”

Inside, much has changed, including a new “less obtrusive” version of Motoblur, Droid Life reports.

  • Android 2.1
  • 3.7-inch screen
  • 750MHz OMAP processor
  • Wi-Fi tethering
  • 8GB internal
  • 8GB SD card included
  • 5 megapixel camera

What’s missing: a front-facing camera (to keep up with the HTC Evo 4G on Sprint and Apple’s new iPhone 4).

I haven’t heard anything definitive about a successor device from the Motorola folks, but that’s no surprise — the Droid itself was given very little pre-release fanfare.

But the specs look suspicious — why would an update to this former flagship device settle for a 750MHz processor? And will there be any increase in display resolution for the new device?

A refresh for the original Droid makes plenty sense, and preserving what made it popular is a smart move. But I can’t imagine the company would spend the money to retool the hardware for such a minor update, internally.

The Moto Droid is like the RAZR ....

Nice, but a piece of crap to use.

I had a RAZR and the battery life was ridiculous. On the beginning it would take 3 days to drain on standby (ie: doing nothing, not even a call). Then a few weeks later, if I didn't charge it every night I would have a dead brick when I need to make a call. Then the reception was horrendous. If I was outside, I would get full signal. But as soon as I walked inside a building, the signal would drop to zero.

That never happened when I owned an Erickson and now with the iPhone.

From friends who got a DROID, I can tell you that they have the same issues I did, compounded with the OS issues. I keep telling them to wait for Flash support .... then they would be lucky to get 2 hrs of usage.

The keyboard update alone may be worth it. the current keyboard is worthless. I've tried to like it but no go.

Perhaps this should be a Driod 1.5 rather than v2.
