LaCie has just announced the availability of the Rugged Safe portable hard drive disk that looks ready to take some rough tumbles. The company is so proud that they even boast that the Rugged Safe is "the safest mobile hard drive on the market."

While touting a product as the most "anything" without a calculation is a bit of a PR tool, the Rugged Safe does look pretty safe nonetheless - both inside and outside.

The exterior is made up of a shock-proof enclosure, weighing 10.5 ounces total and measuring 3.5 x 1 x 5.7 inches. As for protecting precious content on the inside, LaCie has integrated 128-bit AES hardware encryption plus biometric authentication with personalized data control. Up to ten users can gain access.

Compatible with both PCs and Mac computers, the Rugged Safe hosts USB 2.0 and FireWire 800/400 connectivity for plug-and-play access. The fastest recorded transfer rates on the Rugged Safe are up to 800Mbits/s with FireWire 800 and up to 480Mbits/s via USB 2.0.

The Rugged Safe drives are available now, starting at $189.99 for the 500GB capacity and up to $299.99 for 1TB, although that drive appears to be sold out for now at LaCie's online store.

While this looks sturdy enough to take a knock of a desk and should suit most users, it's not military spec or water/fireproof like another unit i have read about.
