Latest Apple TV upgrade adds iTunes TV show streaming, Vimeo support

By | August 1, 2011, 10:37am PDT

Summary: Apple’s latest update to the Apple TV is bringing with it bunch of notable additions: iTunes television show streaming and Vimeo support.

Apple’s latest update to the Apple TV is bringing with it pair of notable additions: iTunes television show streaming and Vimeo support.

The former feature will allow Apple TV owners to free their iTunes-purchased shows from the confines of their computers. Users can also buy television shows directly from iTunes directly from Apple TV.

The latter update, while less exciting, is Vimeo support. Do you like Vimeo? If so, be excited.

Sadly, there doesn’t seem to be support for movies, but chances are that functionality is on its way as well.

So I tested it out

@macadam

Almost everything I purchased is there EXCEPT a season of the digitally remastered Star Treks. I read somewhere else that availability of all purchased items is not guaranteed at all times, depending upon licensing issues and of course the fine print on Apples page "Previous purchases may be unavailable if they are no longer in the iTunes Store".

So I made a master copy of my wife's TV shows (not the Star Treks) for the vault and wiped the rest from the primary and backup drives. Still saves me a ton of hard drive space and probably bought myself a good 6 months to a year before my 2TB drives become cramped.

That's going to clear up a ton of hard drive space for all my wife's TV episodes she bought and watched once.

The current AppleTV doesn't have storage and the previous generation won't run this software. If you delete them, they are GONE.
@macadam

I don't think it's Kosher to link outside articles but elsewhere they did say it includes the ability to "re-download" TV shows to iTunes and iOS devices just like music. I'll be testing this soon myself.

I love this device, it connects iTunes to my server and I can control it with iPad, when I have parties people are impressed with Apple ecosystem...

If I could stream my 1080p movies that I've copied from my bluray's I would be in heaven but Apple won't play nice with MKV yet...

I'd never looked at Vimeo before I did the ATV upgrade today. Wow! Some of those "channels" have some VERY nice content, and they look great on my new 46" HDTV. Yay, Vimeo (and Apple).

Vimeo is awesome

It is about time someone started talking about Vimeo. It is where we keep all of our video for our site and also where all of my HD videos go for home viewing.
