Latest hack gives iPad 3G phone call, texting capabilities

Summary: The latest hack from iPhoneIslam brings phone calls and SMS text messaging to the iPad. But is this something that anyone wants?

SHARE:

Remember when the iPad was announced and the most hip way to criticize it was to call it four iPhones duct-taped together or something along those lines? Since its inception, the one major problem with that criticism was that, unlike the iPhone, the iPad couldn't make phone calls. Until now.

Via PhoneItiPad, an unlocked iPad 3G can be used to make phone calls and send SMS messages - just like its smartphone cousin. While we can't vouch entirely for its veracity, the video above shows a 64 GB iPad making a phone call to Vodafone and texting adjacent iPhones.

PhoneItiPad was developed by the team at iPhoneIslam, who, if you recall, were also responsible for the app that brought FaceTime to the iPhone 3GS. Clearly, these guys know their way around iOS.

There's no word on when the app will make its way to the Cydia Store, but iPhoneIslam says it will make its appearance "soon."

I have wanted texting capabilities from my XOOM but they make me buy a seperate plan so I don't use it!

As for the iPad, I never had the 3G version so it wasn't even an option.

Either way, the larger screen to me is a better text messaging medium.

    • You shoulda got an iPad :) (just joking)

@Peter Perry I have an SMS texting app for the ipad called "TextNow". Its a free, ad based SMS text app that gives you a personal phone number for SMS. I use it all the time. It probably sells all my contacts to the NLSA (Nigerian Lottery Scam Association). Are you sure there is no equiv Android app?

@jondrew Please let's stick to the topic here. What has a call and sms iphone app got to do with Nigeria? Besides more scams are perpetrated daily in and from your country than from Nigeria yearly. I am sure you would take offense if I referred to your country in such a denigrating manner. Please...

It is not necessary to unlock your iPad nor use this app to make calls and send texts. I do not have a data plan on my iPad so I use the TextFree app to make (and receive) free phone calls and send/receive free text messages to any phone. Connect it to wi-fi and your set to go.

  • Stop supporting terrorists!

Clearly this app and the company are terrorists:
    iPhoneISLAM?
They are trying to destroy our western world, one text, one phone call at a time.
    ZDNet - stop supporting terrorists!

No one's explaining this critical point - the iPad has cell phone voice hardware built in???? Why?

      • RE: Latest hack gives iPad 3G phone call, texting capabilities

@Jimster480 No, the headline says the iPad has been given phone call abilities - that would mean it has the ability to communicate on a cell phone network, unless the article really means VoIP, in which case I don't get what the fuss is about.

"Since its inception, the one major problem with that criticism was that, unlike the iPhone, the iPad couldn?t make phone calls. Until now."

So are we talking about making voice phone calls over wireless frequencies or is this an article like the recent spate of "Microsoft buys Skype and three days later my kitten died" articles where the headline's suggesting something that's not true?

I think many people here are missing the point. What this appears to do is enable/install the official Apple Phone and SMS apps that are on the iPhone to the ipad with 3g. It is not VOIP. It is not a replacement for TextFree or any other texting over data app. Since the iPad (unlike the iPhone) is not locked, this is awesome - it allows you to use your iPad abroad as a phone, and with local SIM cards!

@ebernet I agree with the article seeming to say what you're saying, but my question is this: there's no other hardware needed? Does that mean that any laptop with 3G capabilities could be used to make phone calls with the right software? That's the part I'm trying to understand.
