Lenovo has introduced a pair of environmentally-friendly laptops just in time of Earth Day this week.

The ThinkPad L series, comprised so far of the L412 and L512 notebooks, are being touted as highly durable and as being the "greenest on the market."

Lenovo has a few target consumer groups in mind for these rugged ThinkPads. That would include those involved in education, business, the military and the government. Powered by either Intel Core i3 or i5 processors with Turbo Boost and hyperthreading technology, the ThinkPad L portable computers seem ready for the long haul. According to the release, they've even passed "eight different military specification tests," including for extreme temperatures, vibration, altitude and dust.

The 14-inch L412 and 15-inch L512 share several traits, including:

  • Windows 7 with Lenovo Enhanced Experience
  • LED back-lit, anti-glare HD displays (1366 x 768 resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio)
  • Intel Integrated or ATI Mobility Radeon graphics
  • Up to 8GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM
  • Up to 500GB 5400 RPM hard drive
  • 3G/4G wireless connectivity
  • Gobi 2000 module support for AT&T, Sprint and Verizon
  • Built-in webcam (1600 x 1200 resolution)
  • 7-in-1 Card reader
  • Combo eSATA/USB port
  • DisplayPort
  • Multitouch touchpads and spill-resistant keyboard
  • Battery life: up to 8 hours

But again, one of the angles that Lenovo is really pushing with this release is the eco-friendly one. Labeled with an Energy Star 5.0 rating, the ThinkPad L series notebooks are 40% more energy-efficient than previous ThinkPads. Several parts of the machines themselves are made from post consumer content, including old IT equipment and office water jugs that make up the LCD cover, palm rests and top/bottom case. And for the natural finishing touch, these laptops are shipped in almost 100% recycled packaging.

Available starting in mid-May, pricing for the ThinkPads L412 and L512 will start at $649.
