Lenovo to launch 'LePad' tablet by end of 2010

By | July 20, 2010, 2:02am PDT

Summary: Watch out, iPad. Lenovo is jumping into the tablet computer ring later this year with the similarly-named “LePad.”

Watch out, iPad. Lenovo is jumping into the tablet computer ring later this year with the similarly-named “LePad.”

The announcement comes courtesy of recent comments by Liu Jun, the senior VP and president of Lenovo’s Consumer Business Group. While there hasn’t been an official press release or conference regarding the LePad yet, we do know that it will be Android-based and it should launch by the end of 2010.

Hopefully it starts off with Android 2.2 when launched, but anything else could be just as likely given that we don’t know any of the other important specs like display size, processor, etc.

It’s also likely that this will launch in China first (à la LePhone) to test the waters, so don’t bank on seeing this in North America soon just yet.

If this is going to be interesting then Android will need a reworking like Apple gave iPhone OS (now iOS). If the LePad is going to sport vanilla Android then I can't see it being interesting. IMHO this needs to be done by Google, another host of OEM specific Android variants seems to be the very last thing that's needed.

I don't like the name much. Lenovo has rather a lot of "Pad" product names already (IdeaPad, ThinkPad) and "LePad" hardly stands out.

@Jeremy-UK

Yup. The OS has to be a "touch" centric

@bojanwojan

What are you talking about? Android already HAS good support for touch input. It even has multi-touch now.

Depending on what you really mean by "touch-centric", either it already is, because of the above-mentioned support, or it does not need it, since there are other forms of input more suitable for certain tasks.

As usual, Lenovo is given us the vaporware treatment.

Plain and simple, Lenovo: SHIP A PRODUCT! Then, we will be able to judge if it is better that an iPad.

The same statement goes to Microsoft and HP. They have been leaking information in the press, and journalists are writing about it.

I am starting to think that some companies are stakeholders in certain web sites to make sure that their products are prominent... Hmmm. Even though the company has nothing to say or nothing to ship.

SAY NO VAPORWARE! SHIP A PRODUCT!

Funny. I'm reading this on my four year old Lenovo X60 Tablet. And why Android? Debian GNU/Linux is doing an excellent job on my machine. jgaa.

The LePad and Google's Android?
iPad-awan 20th Jul 2010
Ha, ha, ha... what a joke! I guess Google is not serious about competing with Apple.
it needs to support windows 7, so that it can properly support instant data transfer between the business PCs without needing third party apps. you'd be amazed how many file formats are native to windows 7, or could be easily added with a small program suite like openoffice.org

Can we stop naming them after feminine hygiene products?! It was bad enough that Apple decided to call it the iPad, but does the competition have to follow suite in stupid naming conventions? WePad and LePad?! Get serious. I am expecting someone to call theirs MaxiPad any day now.

Talking about problems with our Pads just sounds wrong and I wish marketing types would think these things through before naming these devices (or be force to walk around for a day with one of these stuck between their legs)

@jbmetrics I seem to recollect that Windows has come with an app called "notepad" for many many years. No one made fun of that name.
