Lens mount lets you turn your iPhone 4 into a DSLR

Lens mount lets you turn your iPhone 4 into a DSLR

Summary: Like your iPhone but wish it were bigger and more unwieldily? Try strapping your camera lenses to it with this lens mount.

SHARE:

As a photographer, there is something liberating about being able to carry your iPhone everywhere instead of your camera gear. Of course, all of that is effectively eliminated once you strap a 500mm lens to the front of the thing.

And that's exactly what this lens mount does. Hoping to capture the best of both worlds, the iPhone SLR mount converts the smaller (but comparably impressive) iPhone camera into a much larger contraption. It's compatible with both Canon and Nikon lenses, so no one is left out. For some, this may defeat the purpose of having a portable mobile phone, but for others, it's the $190 iPhone add-on they've always wanted.

No lenses included, sadly.

    Is the image on the iPhone upside-down? I looked at the large version of this picture on photodojo and the trees are upside down?

      @TBone2k
      The image captured on film and later digital image sensors is indeed upside down. This mimics the refraction in the human eye. Just our brains then flip the image over so it is as we see it.

    You said its compatible with Canon and Nikon so no one is left out, but there are some of us DSLR enthusiasts that have gone another route, like Sony, because we can use our older Minolta lenses on it. Does the adapter work on them?

      @sonicgeekette I was thinking about buying an Alpha, then I remembered how much I hate Sony. I have a bunch of old Rokkor (manual focus Minolta) gear that I use with my Canon. I found a site that sells a lens mount flange that you can replace the EF flange with to make it take manual lenses.

But seriously, I don't think Sony bodies are comparable with Canon. The glass, I love Minolta glass, which is why I use a lot of the old manual focus stuff... A lot of the designs are the same as Leica designs. And who can knock the beer-can.

      @sonicgeekette I was thinking the same, I personally use Pentax because I started using it since film times. I do not think this guy (the author) is really a ?Photographer? he is like most everybody else a casual snap-shooter at best.

  • WHY!!!

    This reminds me of those guys who will take a Rolls Royce grill and bungie it to a Volkswagon beetle. The lens your using there costs more than the iPhone. I've yet to see a camera in ANY phone that's as good as your average point and shoot, much less a DSLR. The resolution and image quality just aren't there.

  • You don't know what SLR stands for, do you?

    Just because a camera can take an interchangeable lens, even if they're for an SLR, doesn't make a it a Single Lens Reflex camera. There's no moveable mirror, hence no "reflex."

      @matthew_maurice

      Why flag this? Mathew is correct and even more so since there is not just a single lens ;-)

        No moving mirror, no reflex. Possibly you could call it a Zero Reflex Camera, but that would just be silly, but no more so than the entire concept. I think it is one of those "look what I can do with my iPhone" things that you show everyone once but never actually use.

        Maybe someone took the comment as anti-Apple.

    • RE: Lens mount lets you turn your iPhone 4 into a DSLR

      @matthew_maurice You're technically right, but other cameras have been similarly designated. There was a Nikon with a half-silvered mirror that didn't actually reflex (F5?) but everyone still called it an SLR. Honestly, i common parlance, SLR just means "you see through the lens", no parallax.

      But again, you're technically right. :)

        Not to tell my age, but in the late 1960's, I bought a Canon with a half-silvered mirror that didn't move, but was considered an SLR. I agree with your "common parlance".

        Another funny term is "tape", meaning to record, even when no actual (recording) tape is involved; e.g.: "I taped that show on my DVR last night."

    Why not just...I dunno, buy a camera?

      @Aerowind Seriously, you could get a used dSLR that will beat the pants off of any camera phone for 200$.

    I put this in the dumb as hell department. A low grade point and shoot sensor coupled to a lens no longer able to autofocus, no image stabilization, clutzy setup and for what? If one wants a handy camera..get a real camera and use the iPhone for what it is made for talking texting smartphone surfing and taking pictures of the dented fender when you are paying more attention to your smartphone than traffic. Connecting a real lens to a phone...file under the goofus file department. Naturally, it will sell like hotcakes. Of course I admit to not having nor wanting a smart phone at all. I actually know how to do things on a computer and after a day doing that, the last thing I want is either an iPhone, cellphone or a camera strapped like a dildo to one...

      @nfiertel Actually, it's been my experience with another's iPhone held up to a telescope (carefully) that it will still autofocus.

        @blue_mcoupe@... The iPhone itself will focus, but you'll need to focus the telescope (or in this case) the lens separately.

    While I may not ever use such a device, I must admit that having an defacto 'industry standard' form factor for a mobile phone is nice. I doubt you'll ever see such things for the zillions of different Android phones (or even one)!

    • RE: Lens mount lets you turn your iPhone 4 into a DSLR

      @blue_mcoupe@... Android phones

      And I imagine that 99.44 percent of Android users will never worry about not having this. What a silly device.

        @boomchuck1 I totally agree, but my point was for addon hardware devices in general, some of which might actually be useful.
