Samsung already got started with mass production of transparent LCDs, but LG might not be far behind.

LG recently showed off a brand-new, 47-inch transparent LCD screen with multi-touch capabilities and IPS technology. Sporting a full HD (1,920 x 1,080) resolution, this display will likely be used for advertising and digital signage purposes. Given the multi-touch aspect, these panels could be used for a lot of very creative purposes, much like the large screens that Yahoo set up at bus stops in San Francisco.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any details regarding a production timeline nor shipping dates. For a closer look at LG’s transparent LCD in action, check out the video below:

@KBot I believe this will be just one of the many many possibilities of this technology.
Wow, it's like Avatar...

Totally pointless for most of us. I for one am quite glad I can't see beyond my displays so I don't have to look at any more of the real world than absolutely essential. I want to see where my coffee is, and really, most of the time, that's it.
@jeremychappell

Could you just imagine a fish tank with one side using this product? One second you are watching the fish swim around and then the next second, Snookie makes her appearance! The mind just boggles at the thought.

The technology seems ...

... interesting. The technology makes sense when you have a functional need to see through the screen, as well as view information on it at the same time. Therefore I believe we'll probably see the technology situated in front of windshields in a range of vehicles - from cars to airplanes. We could possibly see the technology in store windows, and a number of other places. I however I doubt it will replace regular flat screens, where the see-through advantage is not needed.
@P. Douglas It WILL probably happen in 15 years, or at least will start replacing in 6 to 8 years. You dont change Windows every day, but it would be a ******* great way to attract customers in restaurants and pubs. You could create a animation using live cams of your restaurant, showing what is happening inside, your food or anything else.
I see a HUUUUUUGE potencial for this. Insanely huge.

Better for small personal devices

Take a 10" version of this. Put a frame around it with a camera in the back of the frame. Add software which recognizes the environment and you could have an instant sign translator and tour guide which overlays information about whatever you are viewing through the display. Or how about a viewer for doctors which lets them see perfectly-aligned patient MRIs or X-rays overlaid on top of the patient as they move the display over the body? It would also be cool to be able to replace windows in your house with these and choose either transparent or whatever animated landscape you desire. Imagine displaying high-definition real-time broadcasts of your favorite beach instead of the wall of the house next door any time you need to relax.
I don't know about you guys, but all I'm thinking of is HUDs ala Halo happy
