Forget dual-core smartphones. This year's Mobile World Congress is looking to be all about the quad-core, Nvidia Tegra 3 superphones.

Both LG and Fujitsu will be introducing quad-core phones at MWC in Barcelona, Spain, next week, and if Nvidia's recent fourth quarter conference call was any indication, they won't be the only ones.

According to LG's press release, the Tegra 3 processor features a 4-Plus-1 core design that uses a "fifth battery-saver core to handle less demanding tasks such as active standby and music playback," as well as a speedy 12-core GPU. That's why smartphones powered by this chip have the computing power for console-quality gaming, but have better battery life than the current crop of dual-core phones.

LG Optimus 4X HD

LG's entrant in the superphone showdown at MWC will be the Optimus 4X HD (pictured right), which offers a 4.7-inch True HD IPS touchscreen, a 8-megapixel rear camera, and runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich. It is unclear at this time whether this phone will reach American shores at all, but we'll find out more next week.

Key Specs:

  • CPU: 1.5GHz Quad-Core processor (NVIDIA Tegra 3)
  • GPU: 12-core
  • Display: 4.7-inch (1280 x 720) True HD IPS
  • Internal Storage: 16GB eMMC
  • RAM: 1GB LP DDR2
  • Camera: 8.0 MP Backside Illumination Sensor (Rear) and 1.3MP (Front)
  • OS: Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • Battery: 2,150mAh
  • Dimensions: 8.9mm thick

Fujitsu's Superphone

Fujitsu may be ready to show-off "sample units" of its Tegra 3 superphone at MWC next week, but is keeping details like the phone's name and specific features a mystery, at least in its press release. What we know about the phone so far:

  • CPU: NVIDIA Tegra 3 (Maximum 1.5Ghz Quad Core + Companion Core)
  • GPU: 12GPU
  • Display: 4.6-inch
  • Camera: 13.1-megapixel (rear)
  • Water-resistant and dust-resistant
  • Equipped with fingerprint sensor
  • OS: Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

The presser also makes reference to WiMax and LTE network technologies, which suggests Fujitsu's superphone could be a 4G device. Beyond these vague bullet points though, the Japanese company is keeping its phone under wraps, at least until the event begins on February 27.

Stay tuned!
