If you're worried about shady characters lurking around home or office, Logitech proposes its Alert digital video security system to keep an eye on things. Now you can too from anywhere using an iPad.

The app allows users to view 720p HD video that is captured by one of the Logitech Alert systems and add-on cameras designed for this purpose. The cameras also pick up audio, which can be transfered to the iPad as well.

Users can also get motion alerts on the ipad if they have the Logitech Alert Web and Mobile Commander service that records motion detection and manages system settings accordingly.

The Logitech Alert app for iPad is free and should be available in the iTunes App Stores in the U.S., Europe and Asia at some point this month. The actual service costs $79.99 per year, and then the cameras to be paired with Logitech Alert range from $229.99 to $349.99.

For a cheaper, more DIY version of the same, check out iCam - it has motion detection, live viewing (via the iCam app), image recording (though no live sound if I remember correctly), and supports multiple cameras and computers. I use it whenever we are going to be out of the house for a while, and set the save location to dropbox for easy backup and remotely accessing the motion detected images.
