HTC just unveiled the Salsa and ChaCha mobile phones with dedicated Facebook buttons, and according to Mark Zuckerberg himself, there are many more just like them on the way.

Facebook's CEO has denied a "Facebook phone" in the past, and to some extent these developments don't contradict that. Instead we'll see "dozens of phones with much deeper social integration than anything we've seen so far."

The global social networking site already has its mark (no pun intended) on most smartphones and featurephones either via optimized mobile apps or the mobile Facebook site. As much as I use Facebook myself, the app is enough for me.

However, younger mobile phone users will likely enjoy having a dedicated Facebook button. Let's just hope that the mobile devices that sport Facebook buttons will have enough other useful features to back them up.

Zuckerberg is much like Julain Assange. They both claim to be improving the flow of information and trying to help the world with their new ideas.

Both believe they have a right to control someone else's information both are a little odd and both are total control freaks.

Is difficult to know if its the power or the money which gets them overexcited. What they both have in common is a few of their own skeletons in the cupboard.

  • I don't get FaceBook

I must be getting old. I really don't see the value in FB. I hear people say "I found old friends". Well if they were my friends, we would not have lost each other. Plus the fact that every other week someone is hacking FB and stealing info plus FB selling your personal info, I will never put my info on there.

      @msprygada
The real purpose is to allow people to pretend they are being social, all the while further isolating people from other real people. There are no redeeming values here.

    • Well, my family & friends do...

      msprygada,

At 67, I'm the oldest person in my extended (geographically speaking) family, and we see a lot of value in FB. I can see photos of my grandnieces and nephews, we can share family stories without the hassle of group or individual emails. You see, most of us are either former military or our parents were, and back in the pre-internet days, we only heard from each other via letters, Xmas greeting carda and the occasional family reunion (which only happen these days on the death of a family member).

And none of us grew up in one town - we went to school all over the US and the globe - and, in circumstances such as that, it's rather easy to lose track of one's friends (zBs [zum Beispiel], I graduated from High School in Heidelberg, Germany. My brother and sister graduated from Augsberg American HS). I have classmates (and Army friends scattered all over the world!

And I must also say that - being military brats and former military - we understand PERSEC (MilSpeak for personal security...).

And I must also say that, through FB, I've met other SpecOps and EOD people from all around the globe. As the saying goes, "friends that I never knew I had...."

Are we supposed to be impressed? Is this supposed to pass as revolutionary progress? What's next? An F1 button for Help?

  • Exactly what I wanted

I was really really looking forward to a phone that ran on a security-compromised OS that let me download any virus under the guise of an app without the minimum quality assurance to at least curtain memory and information leaks such as Android.

It is going to be so cool to own a Facebook phone on top of this architecture. Oh the fun of trying to find my privacy settings buried in layers of crashing screens and then discover that in the past few months my emergency calls to the Samaritans have been religiously logged by some friendly corporation so that I can have that cheap Prozac banner displayed on my Angry Birds opening screens.

Wow, how do these guys know we want something like this so much? Spooky, ins't it?

    ...even more useless.

  • Sounds like a good idea to drop them, but throwing them away works better.
