Microsoft "fixes" faulty Xbox 360 update by giving away a free console

By | May 23, 2011, 1:11pm PDT

Summary: Microsoft tries to avoid a Sony-style PR blunder for a faulty firmware update by preemptively offering customers a new 250 GB Xbox 360 S and 1-year subscription to Xbox LIVE.

Console gamers just can’t catch a break with the video game gods. This time, it is Xbox 360 gamers who can’t play their games.

Some Xbox 360 owners are finding a “disk unreadable” or “disk unsupported” error after updating their consoles with the most recent update, where the only fix is to have their consoles replaced, according to TG Daily.

At least Microsoft is proactively seeking out affected customers through Xbox LIVE and offering them a new Xbox 360 S (250 GB) plus a one-year free subscription to Xbox LIVE. Kotaku reports that Xbox gamer Avery Penn found out his console is eligible for a new one by email before his DVD drive failed and could no longer load his games. His 360 60GB Pro was bought in 2009 and has a LiteOn DVD drive. Microsoft is certainly learning from Sony’s recent troubles with disgruntled gamers who were locked out of the PSN for nearly a month.

According to Kotaku, this update “reflashes the DVD drive to a new stock firmware, and adds support for new XGD3 disk format. It’s this update that allows an extra GB of usable storage on game discs.” Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry blog believes Microsoft is not just being altruistic in offering customers new consoles: the new update is supposed to beef up the console’s ability to detect pirated disks/non-retail disks and prevent them from playing the full game in the future.

If your 360 is affected by the firmware update, contact Xbox Support here or DM XboxSupport on Twitter for assistance. Unfortunately, there is no comprehensive list available to check the impact the update may have on your console before you install it. Microsoft did acknowledge the problem “is not specific to older or newer versions of Xbox 360” so there is only one way to find out. Good luck!

(Note: This problematic update is not the upcoming one that will allow Xbox LIVE customers to purchase content through their PayPal accounts.)

Its the fact that old hardware on 360's doesn't support the new format. I for one HOPE my xbox 360 fails. I'd love to get a smaller, quieter, and FREE refresh.

I'd have to say that they did less learning from Sony recently, and more learning from their own red ring problems early on in the consoles life.

No one is perfect and Microsoft is doing the right thing here. No questions asked, no lawsuits, just good customer service.

you have no clue how complicated updates are. 99.99% may go perfectly well (especially in testing), but that 0.001% (which is MS case may represent thousands of people) inevitably did something (consciously or not) that messed up their best efforts to provide a smooth experience.

walk in their shoes for a day and you won't complain anymore.

Effective Customer Service

So many other organizations cause breaks like this. My cable card company recently remotely deployed an update that bricked my box. I had to track *them* down and get my device repaired. It is good to see one of the earliest adopters of cloud-based technologies be proactive and reach out to ther affected customers. This is an example where the cloud "just works".

With Sony having so many problems lately I'm not surprised they are pulling out the stops to keep their customers happy. They are probably trying to pull in as many disgruntled Play Station owners as possible and don't need a debacle of their own.

Not a logical reasoning
wackoae 23rd May 2011
@Bookmark71 The offer is of no benefit to anybody but owners of an OLD XBox.

Sure, it may look like a good PR move .... but anybody with 1/2 an active neuron can see that Sony's problems are enough of an incentive and spending so much money on freebies is completely UNNECESSARY.

I think MS realized that the market for XBox has reached saturation and are just trying to get rid of a large inventory.

This is NOT restricted to old Xbox. There is some drivers that cant be updated to read this new format. It was made to gain 1Gb AND to stop/slowdown piracy.
I believe they are doing very well, and the Xbox is selling as hot cakes yet. The market is gigantic, and hardly saturated. (my opinion)

this author is an idiot. They said before it was going to launch this was going to happen (it was Known that some consoles wouldn't support the disk change). It's not FAULTY software if it's doing what it's meant to do. They even notified the users who might potentially have problems and said they'd send them a free Xbox.

I own both an Xbox 360 and a PS3 so don't waste your time saying this is like Sony's previous incident. It's not even remotely. Microsoft treats costumers with respect and if something is wrong fixes the problem. Sony didn't address it until weeks after.

Mr. Author, stop being a POS with leading titles b/c it just makes you look like a dumbass.

@jbisepic jbisepic, Mr. Author is a girl. Just saying. Might want to check the pronouns.

Microsoft notified users who's machines might potentially BREAK when they put in the new update? Yeah, updates that intentionally break a machine are not exactly "fault free."

And when did Microsoft notify everyone? I didn't get any notice, and I don't know anyone else who got the notice. Not exactly clear and conspicuous if they don't even note this on their website.

@awkward hug This is what I believe: its because they'll just send advices to people who registered their actual Xbox's serial numbers and have a non updatable driver.

Indeed, just like most Xbox consoles, most WP7 phones update just fine. Only a very small percentage of Samsung WP7 phones didn't, because of Samsung.

wait, MS is putting an update out that allowes XBL users to use their paypal accounts, but won't put an update out for GFWLive so we can play our XBL games we already bought on PC? MS needs to get their priorities straight. Fix he software you already have instead of adding new features. GFWLive doesn't even support party chat!

@John Zern The market for the XBox is being saturated for some time.

The people who wanted the platform already have it. Hardly anybody is buying the product anymore.

MS giving away XBox mean poor sales
wackoae 23rd May 2011
I think that by now, the XBox has reached market saturation and MS is resorting to giving away the product.

Although the idea sounds good for the consumer (get a free new box for an old one), business wise it makes no sense unless the product is dead and they want to get rid of a high inventory.

Note that they are also giving away an XBox with a purchase of some models of Win7 PCs.

RE: Microsoft
bobiroc 23rd May 2011
@wackoae

What? This is in direct response to an issue caused by a failed update that bricked the console. Sure sales of the XBOX 360 are down due to it's age but Sony made similar promotional deals with their TVs and PS3s, and Apple makes deals with iPods and Mac Computers.

I think this is just Microsoft giving good customer service and the other deal is because of the summer season approaching and kids going away to school. Sure they want to get the console out there more but Microsoft didn't have to give a New 250GB unit when they could have given a refurb of a similar spec console in its place.

Pretty sure they sold more XBOX's in 2010 than they did in 2009. It is selling less but still selling well.
@bobiroc MS is just giving away unsold inventory. Same as others.

Sorry to spoil your favorite brand .... but this kind of giveaways are usually a sign that the product is not selling as well as they want.

I'm not saying that the XBox is a bad product. Only that the market is SATURATED and MS is forced to give away the remaining inventory ... probably to cover contractual or licensing obligations with game developers and/or hardware vendors.

@wackoae

yeah....saturation....no one is buying anything....so I guess the 10 million Kinect sensors that have been sold didn't happen?

MS doesn't make money from the sale of the X Box CONSOLE anyway, they make money from the games.

Can't they just make an upgrade that
James Quinn 23rd May 2011
won't brick older models? Or one's that have a specific firmware? You know upgrade only to a point? Then come up with a screen that says "MS recommends you consider purchasing a newer XBox 360 to take full advantage of further upgrades" Something like that?

RE: Microsoft

@James Quinn

I am not sure how many this affected but my 360 is about 4 years old and took the update just fine. That is if it is the one that was pushed about a week or so ago.

The point is sometimes updates cause undesired affects and have no consistent reason like the age of the device. All that matters is that a company takes care of it's customers when undesired effects happen which is the case here.

So you think MS should act more like Apple and just say 'screw you' to longtime customers who don't want to buy a new console for no reason?

This is the RIGHT THING to do.

Uneducated article
tamer@... 24th May 2011
The article is uneducated.

First of all, there is no bug in the update that breaks the consoles. Microsoft knows that limited number of consoles won't be able to handle the update, but they will release the firmware update anyway.

Those who have a console that is not compatible with the new software will be or have already been contacted by Microsoft to get a new console.

Title is misleading, the article is misleading. And all in all this issue has nothing to do with Sony incident. Not even slightly.

The Ps3 is pretty much worthless for that format, basiclly blueray player that has gran turismo 5 as a selling point. if xbox 360 had gran turismo 5 i wouldnt have bought a PS3. my 40gb ps3 has been firmware updated by sony sothat i cant even run yellow dog any longer so fu*k sony, hope they die off..;O)
