Summary: Last month, a photo and spec details of the rumored Motorola Droid 2 surfaced. Now, new photos have surfaced on the web - along with a potential release date and carrier.

Last month, a photo and spec details of the rumored Motorola Droid 2 surfaced. Now, new photos have surfaced on the web - along with a potential release date and carrier.

According to a tip to Engadget, we could be seeing the Droid 2 released as soon as August on Verizon Wireless.

That could certainly help Verizon out with sales, not just because this Android 2.1-powered smartphone is already garnering a lot of attention, but the service provider is running short on a lot of supplies lately. Namely the HTC Droid Incredible and even the Motorola Droid X this past weekend.

It hasn’t been exactly determined which kind of material Motorola used for the 3.7-inch display, but if it’s OLED, we could be looking at a future shortage with this model too.

More rectangular slabs of .. what?

The advantatage of android is the same disadvantage. No two models running the same OS are similar.

And it will really take something to design new eye-catchers. These phones all look the same.

Same as iPhone, WinMo touch phones, Nokia touch phones, and everybody else's touch screen phones.

It's what they do, and how they do it that differs.

Not much you can do with looks, when it's a big, black slab of glass.

Please spare us the contrasting of "no two are the same yet all are the same" as though it provides some sort of meaningful distinction between the varying ecosystems. They all run Android in flavors the same as iOS devices run it in flavors (even if SJ only wants you to get one flavor - his current fav).

As an iOS dev I can tell you that having to redesign your app graphics every time a new model comes out because Apple decided to force yet another 'improved feature' into your design is no different than having a fractured OS ecosystem - a pain in the @$$.

As to that eye-catching business, I am assuming you mean Android phone shapes as opposed to that exciting new shape the iOS devices come in... and by that I mean rectangular.

Yes, another stunning innovation by crApple - rectangles.

Me, I'm waiting for a phone in the shape of a regular dodecahedron rather than these boring rectangular slabs. And a nice glowing pulsing aurora borealis effect would be far preferable to plain black or black/silver...

The real question is if MOT will break out of the anti-competitive, consumer repressive business model and sell their products directly to customers who are free to choose the carrier they wish to use?

How long will they keep it alive, 4 months?

Have you noticed the short lifetime of the new Android handsets? Droid 1, Nexus One, isn't it just too short? Do we need to switch our smartphones every 4 months?

@MobileSpoon Who says you need to update? They are merely offering something newer than what they had before; if you "need to switch" it's thanks to gadget envy, they aren't putting a gun to your head.

I think I've got the Droid X in my hand, there are no Incredibles to be had, so if they get that out before my 30 days is up on the Droid X and it sucks, I may give the Droid 2 a shot. Otherwise, I'll be like everyone else reading this, stuck in a 2 year contract, so it really doesn't matter what they release until the next window of upgrade opportunity presents itself.

I can't upgrade until April 2011, so I'm not like everyone else reading this thread. I'm not stuck with an Incredible or a Droid X.

However, I can't help but wonder....

Will this Droid 2 save me if I'm stuck in the garbage compactor on an Imperial Star Destroyer screaming into my communicator, "Save me Droid 2, Save me!"
