Controlling Netflix on an Xbox 360 can be done hands-free now if you have a Kinect set up too.

Microsoft first promised this update way back when at CES 2011 in January. Starting today, it's a reality.

However, it's a little tricky. While users will be able to waive their hands and use their voices to activate commands during playback of all titles available in the Netflix library, it's not possible to use Kinect (yet) to start all films. Rather, there is only a "recommended" list to get things started. In those cases, the controller is the good ol' default option.

Nevertheless, this is a pretty welcome update - especially for the couch potatoes who don't feel like getting up to grab the remote or controller.

  • Nice

    I will have to see how it works next time I go to stream a movie or TV show off of Netflix.

    • Kinect on a PC for WMC would be cool

      @bobiroc
      I just started using WMC a little bit ago, pretty cool. Imagine if you could do it all with a wave of your hand!

      • WMC is very cool

        @Will Farrell

        I use it all the time and use the media extender on my Xbox all the time too. My next project is to build a Windows Home Server to have a nice central place for all my media that I can access virtually anywhere there is an internet connection

        Maybe Microsoft will update more of their features to be Kinect friendly including the WMC part.

    Not to nitpick, but "hands-free" is a little misleading, since, you know, you need to wave your hands to interact with Kinect. Just sayin'. ;p

    It this geek cool? Yes.

    But this is WAY down on the priority list of Netflix features that should be added to the 360. How about adding 5.1 audio, just to catch up with the PS3/Netflix package??!!
