Netflix arriving on PlayStation 3 next month

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 will have some more competition from Sony’s PlayStation 3 next month, as Netflix just announced that its subscribers will soon be able to stream movies and TV programs from another source.

While the Xbox 360 once had an exclusivity contract with Netflix, it appears that won’t be so after next month. It won’t be entirely easy for PlayStation users, however, as they will have to pop in and play a special Blu-ray disc in the machines to be able to stream content. Then, subscribers can connect to Netflix via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. It might be more of a bargain, as Sony’s online video service usually charges between $3 to $4 per program, whereas Netflix has monthly unlimited subscriptions beginning at $8.99.

RE: Netflix arriving on PlayStation 3 next month

I used to subscribe to Netflix, but found that oftentimes I was holding onto movies way too long to gain value from the monthly fee. I have a PS3, and I can see myself signing back on to Netflix for the entry level $8.95 monthly plan because of this.

Hail PS3!!

PS3 is on the roar.. After beating XBox after a long time in console sale, they are back in news again after a successful deal with netflix.

I was expecting this deal a year before. But its never too late. All the things will turn out to be good for Sony.

Guess microsoft should again frame a new strategy for Xbox rather then just reducing the price.

Xbox is still selling well...

...why drop the price and hurt the bottom line? Plus, they will probably hold that bullet in the chamber until Nadal comes out. Then they can lower the Core system price and charge a normal price for the Add-on Nadal unit and reduce the sting for new entrants in the Xbox console family.

Remember, they have an obligation to their shareholders. Dropping price just to stay ahead of the PS3 in sales isn't a perogative. Keeping the gaming unit profitable so the company will have funds to invest in new tech is.

As for the PS3, it's a neat machine - but I find I only use mine for the BluRay player (and that's a rarity). For games, I use my Xbox. Controller is more comfortable on the XBox 360 (imho).

I prefer my PS3

I like its controller and interface better. I love the fact that I can play online FOR NO ADDITIONAL COST too.
I use my XBox for whatever XBox exclusives I have.

Now with this new Netflix feature I'll be set (I refuse to pay $50/yr for stupid XBox Live Gold).

But what's up with having to pop a Blu-Ray in in order to stream Netflix??

XBL Gold..
Fark 26th Oct 2009
It's $50. Not breaking the bank here. And I find the time saved finding other players and matchmaking simplicity is well worth it. Time is money - I guess I just value my time highly.

Contoller feel is up to the user - I find the PS3 controller too small and sharp. The XBL fits like a glove and it easier to hold for (OMG) too many hours on end - Damn you ODST!

It Really is About Time...

Sony leverage the power under the hood of this thing! It has driven me crazy. The graphics processing power of PS3 coupled with its Internet capabilities, and Sony's footprint in consumer electronics, what little they have done with this platform is nothing short of embarrassing.

I can hardly wait; maybe someday it will become a DVR as well; I can only hope.

It's like the most awesome bluray player ever... Wait what?

THIS system should be cracked and someone should port Linux to it. I bet you could send rockets to the moon with the power it has under the hood. It feels like wasted power, like all tire smoke and no peel out!

Linux is on the PS3 - sort of...

Several Linux distributions HAVE been ported to the PS3 (Ubuntu, Yellow Dog, etc.). However, it appears Sony has limited (read: crippled) access to the GPU cores that make the PS3 a multimedia machine. Right now it's an awesome game console, a marginal network media player (needs a PC media server to deliver/transcode many standard video streams - *.vob, the DVD standard, for instance), and a pitiful Linux "PC". Hopefully the NetFlix application will have permission to use all the horsepower under the hood and enable DVD-quality streaming... otherwise you might as well break out the VCR.

I have been waiting for this to come along for quite some time! Now I can move my Roku box into the bedroom and have Netflix streaming in 2 rooms. Sweet!
