Microsoft is gearing up for the release of its new gaming consoles and accessories, starting with the new Xbox 360 in August followed by a Kinect bundle this holiday season.

A good deal of the information Microsoft is announcing today was already known, but we’ll humor them anyway and fill you in with the new stuff first.

On August 3rd, the revamped Xbox 360 in a black matte finish will be available for purchase for $199. Remember that the new version was unveiled back at E3 2010 in June, and it will include Wi-Fi, touch-sensitive buttons, and a paltry 4GB of flash memory. But it’s somewhat cheaper, so hey, that’s how it goes.

On November 4th, the Kinect is expected make its long-awaited commercial debut for $149.99. You can also choose to buy the Kinect as part of a bundle with the new Xbox 360 for $299.99, although it’s not clear yet if the bundle will drop the same day as the Kinect alone. Both are up for pre-sale now.

Note that pre-ordering either the Kinect standalone or as part of the bundle will also get you a copy of Kinect Adventures to get your new gaming collection started.

@wackoae - Where are you getting your data from? In the US the 360 is the number 2 console based on sales. The PS3 is still in 3rd place even though it has had lots of momentum since last years price drop.

Real gamers prefer the 360, casual gamers prefer the Wii and people who want a blue ray player tend to get the PS3.

Since the 360 can stream movies in HD MSFT has not need to worry about blue ray at this point, but the casual market is bigger than the core gamer market by a large margin. It makes sense for MSFT to go after that market, though I am can't say if the price Kinect will attract that market. They have to markey properly and compare it's value to the true cost of a Wii with 2 wands and 2 controllers.

I also don't think these games should be more than $40.

The new consoles have been in stores since the week of the announcement. Saw a few in the Best Buy near my house just a few days ago. So these must be the Arcade/base models.

They still missed the point

The main reason why the PS3 is still the #2 and the XBox is the #3 (in a market of 3 competitors) is because the PS3 can be used as a Blu-Ray player.

Releasing a v2.0 (this not a new device ... only the Kinect addon is) without a Blu-Ray drive is going to keep the XBox360 in the #3 spot ..... even if it has better games than the PS3+ platform.
