Nintendo says Wii U may not be too much more powerful than PS3, Xbox

Summary: Think the Wii U will blow the current generation of consoles out of the water? Think again, says Nintendo.

HD or not, Nintendo's Wii U may not drastically outperform the current generation of consoles. At least, that's according to Nintendo's own Shigeru Miyamoto, who said in an interview that the company aims to pursue a balance between price and power with the Wii U.

"I don't know that we would be able to sit here and say that it's going to necessarily dramatically outperform the systems that are out now," Miyamoto told GameSpot. "It's part of the balance that we strike in terms of trying to find entertainment that is new and unique."

The result? The Wii U may outperform the current generation of consoles, but not by much.

But how much does that really matter? As the Wii has no doubt proven, a lot can be done with comparatively limited hardware. Likewise, having a console appear at an affordable price point is more valuable for its longterm success than the number of enemies that it can render at one time.

Still, with the next PlayStation and Xbox less than two years away, Nintendo may be taking a huge risk that the Wii U won't be completely overshadowed by the next generation of consoles.

This latest bit of news comes after a number of similar clarifications by Nintendo on the Wii U's capabilities. Not only will the console lack DVD and Blu-ray playback, but Nintendo is inching away from making it capable of supporting more than one touch screen controller at once.

Except it appears as though the main device will be doing a lot of processing, not only for the television itself, but for the tablet-like controllers themselves. I could be wrong, though.

@ian.aldrighetti Controller. Singular. It only has to process for one.

      • Reggie said it will support more than one controller

        @Aerowind

Iwata said that they won't be sold seperately. That doesn't mean your friend can't bring one over and use it.

@Aerowind If there is only one that you can buy, then that is a major fail.

Doesn't that kind of take the We out of Wii? Though I guess that's what the U is for, as in you have to play alone...

  • With most of the price going into the ill-designed controller,

which will make playing Wii Bowling far more interesting as much as it will make playing the same game much less practical...

Never mind being limited to one controller (planned obsolescence, reel 'em in and then put out the inevitable new version with *gasp* 2 controllers AND a fuzzy pink hat accessory)...

It's going to sell, and it's going to sell well, but being first in a new generation of gaming isn't always a good thing. Look what happened to the Dreamcast, despite it being a great system with rock solid awesome games, and being very well received, once PS2 hit the market, it was all over.

Dreamcast sucked. I never understood people who like them.

@Droid101 To each their own on this subject, but personally I felt it had the most comfortable controller with the unique VMU memory card, the first online console experience and first online game chat for a console as well. It was a perfect size, keyboard and mouse support which made playing Quake3 Arena and UT much easier online, integrated servers for some games that were also on PC... I could go on but I made my point.

Some people are not SEGA fans so they never liked the Dreamcast, but most console gamers have a soft spot for the Dreamcast.

Just curious, what sucked about the Dreamcast? I still have mine connected to my HDTV via the PC port. I enjoy some of the older games now and again. The Dreamcast was a great system for the time. The lack of support from EA and the huge marketing power behind the PS2 was too much for Sega (and other silly business mistakes that haunted them *couch 32x/SegaCD (yep, still have my original SegaCD and Night Trap/Sewer Shark). One good thing that came from EA's decision to sit out the Dreamcast was the 2k sports franchines. I still think they are the best NFL*/NBA/NHL video games hands down. *EA locked up the NFL rights and pretty much killed the 2k NFL games. So, if you didn't like the Dreamcast that's fine, but at the least say why it sucked in your opinion.

@Bates_ I think the Dreamcasts problem was the price tag was ahead of it's time.

I hope it at least has enough added memory to enable more AA and AF to games...that is my biggest complaint for consoles.

  • Why do you make stuff up?

The next Xbox and PS are less than two years away? Both have said their next console is in development, but neither have given any sort of time frame. Why would you even do that? Journalist? I don't think so.

I need a blog here so I can just make up random statements that people will take as fact. The GodStation will be out next year and is able to create entire life forms based on your acheivments!

  • Nintendo never said it would be more powerful

it was all the media claiming this when no one and I mean no one has even seen the spec sheets. Nintendo innovates they never ever push the hardware boundaries and that is why they remain profitable.

  • It needs 1080p

and it needs 1080p in Wii and GameCube games (if GameCube disc compatibility is retained). 5.1 and 7.1 discrete in-game surround sound would also be nice, but I'm not expecting Blu-Ray or DVD movie support. An internal hard drive or SSD would also be a huge bonus - or even a slot for one that could be installed by the end user, since 512MB isn't going to cut it. Finally, an app that could pick up on iTunes Sharing AND DLNA media shares would be a big win for this machine being a big part of the digital living room (iTunes Sharing has been an open protocol for a while). That's just my thoughts though.

Microsoft ans Sony are rookies with consoles, remember what happened with xbox360 and ps3? They all broke and gamers hate to turn in their consoles because of companies fault, also to end up with used machines by others!! reserviced.

This 2 companies WILL need up to 3 years to balance their machines after the official release, they proved that!! Not to mention the poor support ps3 had in the beginning and the only thing ps3 lovers got for the first 1-2 years, was the blu - ray.

I mean, wii U use a power 7 by IBM 4 cores and 16 threads cpu. If sony and microsoft try to franchise and give us an even more powerful cpu than that, they will have lots of problems with heat and stability, a risk to buy it.

I will never forget that I turned my xbox360 4-5 times in, 3 ring of deaths and personality flip.. My xbox didnt knew that its an xbox. I never bought ps3, as I new they have similar problems, and also this machines are dying very easy!! After the 2 years of warranty, they end up in the trash bin and we have to spend another money to buy a new one.
Nintendo's built quality is in another level, my snes, gamecube, wii, black and white gameboy, color gameboy, ds, still working and never turned in anything!
