Well, that was fast. Nokia has reportedly killed the N9-00 MeeGo phone before most people even knew it existed.

According to Reuters, "two industry sources close to the company said" that Nokia stopped "development of its first smartphone using its new MeeGo operating system before it was ever launched." And that's that. Nothing more concrete was offered, but perhaps Nokia realized that the platform just couldn't compete with Google's Android and Apple's iOS. The Finnish company is going to have to pull a Microsoft and grab a WP7 out of its hat.

Now if Nokia could only get the e7 smartphone shipping worldwide like it should have been by now (OK, at least it's available in Europe), things would be running much smoother for the Helsinki-based phone maker.

@Linux Geek And what exactly is MeeGo if it is not a Linux based OS, pray tell...?

@scottishwildcat MeeGo is GNU/Linux distro that didn't get its chance. Nokia didn't embrace it, just sit on it for some time and now ex-Microsoftie Elop wants to kill it. And kill nokia with it. Push into icy sea. And Microsoft set up sharks down there.

Did you know Nokia owns Trolltech - the company the produced Qtopia - later known as QT Extended? Do you remember the Trolltech Green Phone? Do you even know what QT Extended is?

Apparently NOT. QT Extended is a distribution of EMBEDED LINUX.

Furthermore, MeeGo - the OS to have been used on the N9-00 is yet another flavor of Embedded Linux. Likely to be built on top of Qtopia/QTE.

Now... Go change your handle. You do not deserve the name Linux Geek.

  • GREAT! E7

If it was that silver thing, it was fugly, and MeeGo just took focus from development of Symbian.

    WP7, hope not.

E7 soon! Mine is here and solid quality, so USA can't be far behind.
