The Nokia N8, a.k.a. the the first Symbian^3 powered handset, has finally gotten an official release date.

It was already reported that this much-awaited smartphone would start shipping at the end of September, but an established date has been elusive. We have one now...at least in the U.K., but it is likely that it will be the same (if not very, very close) in the United States.  The Nokia N8 will pop up on shelves on October 1 for £429 ($663) "SIM free" or with a contract, starting at £35 ($54) per month.

There's a lot to be excited about with the Nokia N8, particularly the 12-megapixel HD camera, HDMI output and Dolby Digital Plus surround sound.

Eager buyers in the U.S. can still pre-order one now for a whopping $549.99. At least the contract-free version is cheaper stateside.

One amazing feature of the N8 is the USB On-the-Go feature. Basically this lets you connect your portable storage devices such as your USB flash drive directly to the phone through an adaptor that Nokia bundles with the phone. The memory card then shows up in the File Manager on the phone and from there you can access the files stored on the USB device. You can open the files on the N8 if it is in a format that the phone supports, copy it to the phone, copy a file from the phone on to the USB drive and even send the files on the USB storage over MMS or Bluetooth. This is a really convenient feature and makes you wonder why other devices don't support it.

Ovi Store needs a few thousand Apps. Until that doesn't happen, very few are going to be interested in any of Nokia's phones. And I hope it doesn't turn out to be a disaster like N97 which had a pathetic touchscreen.

The new Nokia N8 may be a nice phone. But Nokia needs so much more than 'just a nice phone' to remain relevant. Read more here: http://thesecondopiniontribune.blogspot.com/2010/09/nokia-struggle-to-remain-relevant-in.html
