Nook color e-reader is coming, report says

By | October 21, 2010, 1:07pm PDT

Summary: A full-color, Google Android-based Nook e-reader is coming to Barnes & Noble soon, according to a new report.

A tipster has informed my CNET colleague David Carnoy that a full-color, Google Android-based Nook e-reader is coming to Barnes & Noble soon.

Carnoy reports that an anonymous but reliable source says the “Nook Color” will have a seven-inch display and retail for $249.

The idea? As Amazon “zigs” with its new, thinner, lighter, cheaper Kindle, B&N “zags” by going the color route and offering this model alongside its monochrome original, which will get a firmware update to zap those laggy performance issues.

The big question: does color matter? Remember, e-ink technology is easy on the eyes, but it doesn’t mean you’ll be watching high-definition video on your Nook Color, either — you’ll still need an iPad for that.

For science textbooks and other applications that have illustrations, color is a huge deal. Take a medical text for example — using colors to differentiate muscle groups is major. And it goes without saying that the New York Times with color pictures helps convey the story much more effectively.

On the other hand, do enough customers buy that kind of content that it will warrant a separate, more expensive device? B&N clearly thinks so.

If we ever get the foldable screen up and working, I want a parchment scrool format reader!
One handle holds the batteries (3xAA for the slim pocket version). The other holds the electronic smarts. Two foldable "arms" swing out from one of the ends, allowing the screen to be stretched out flat. When rolled up, the whole thing is about as thick as a Mag-Lite torch.

Price, once again, will be a factor

I am going to pick up a Kindle soon, but for what I want it for color will simply not be an issue. Now, I wouldn't mind color, but I held off buying a reader until now because I could not justify the price. With the Kindle dropping down towards $100 the price is no longer an issue. $250, though, would be a tough sell.

If this is true, I have high doubts its going to be color e-ink.

Sounds like a tablet

@Playdrv4me Since it would use the Android OS, it is very likely a tablet with the Nook name ..... unless Sony cripples the OS down to just an e-reader ......

@wackoae The current black and white Nook is Android, so I don't think so.

Color e-Ink

@Playdrv4me ... Should be using color e-Ink. Kindle should be releasing one as well.
I remember a number of years ago when Palm was rumored to be coming out with a color PDA and everyone was questioning whether color was necessary. Today you can't even buy a non-color PDA.
I would certainly consider buying an e-reader if it had a color digital ink screen that could be read in full sunlight. If it is just a tablet with an LCD screen, I'd probably consider the iPad or the rumored smaller iPad.

There is no smaller iPad

Steve Jobs *told* you a 7" screen is DOA. And he'll never build one. Of course, that's what he said about Netbooks too.

I frequently load pdf files on my Nook. Many of these files have color graphs as well as pictures. Viewing the files in color would be a benefit. Maps look much better in color.

Black and white comics look awfully nice on the Kindle. Color comics would look really slick.

I think they could be very popular at $250, even if the hardware is mediocre.

The big market here is for magazine subcriptions. The display may not be high definition, but color is a necessity to enjoy the content of most periodicals.

Master Joe Says...Color Matters To Me
MasterJoe 22nd Oct 2010
I am legally blind. I've tried the Kindle, and just don't think e-ink is right for me. I can see text at a smaller font when it is white on black. So, if the Nook lets me do that, I would likely buy it. I have inquired about even allowing you to invert the e-ink display on the Kindle to be gray on black (something that the device does occasionally anyway, like when flipping a page. Amazon has said they have no plans to implement such functionality. As a result, if this comes out and is good, I will be buying one.

Color yes, eBook reader no
dave@... 22nd Oct 2010
I'm not buying into anyone's dedicated eBook reader. The very notion of a proprietary reader undoes one major feature of print books -- competition.

On the other hand, I love the concept of eBooks in general. I design electronics: I would love to have a reader with enough resolution to let me store 10-20GB of PDF datasheets on an SD card... enough for a project. And with enough battery life to last a day's viewing, with a display readable in bright lab light.. or on the beach.

I think tablets will soon bet the answer. All day run, choice of screen sizes, daylight displays, SD card slots, and the ability to work with pretty much anyone's eBook standards. This won't be an iPad... Apple has a lack of real vision there... iPad is really just a big fat iPod. Sure, a proven safe model, but their product religion will limit that device, just as it's hurting the iPhone. Maybe on Android, maybe something else, not likely Windows. But soon... certainly within a year. And I'll bet less than 2x the price of the color nook.

As a technophile and early adopter, I jumped on the nook when it first came out. It is/was a nifty device though it sits around unused most of the time. Where it was really practical was traveling or on vacation where taking several books was just too cumbersome. Otherwise, it doesn't have a whole lot of utility. There isn't much push content and the newspapers are just too expensive. The e-books are quite pricey too and considering that you really don't own the titles, it is a bit hard rationalizing laying out the capital. Considering that I can loan/give my real books which generally cost the same/less money to my friends/family - the nook has a loan feature but it is exclusive to another nook - buying e-books is even less attractive.

Although, the B&N folks have tried to tweak the nook by adding on a rudimentary and painfully slow browser, it is really an e-reader. Apart from viewing e-file types, the nook is abysmal at displaying and manipulating .pdf's. It really is a one trick pony and my droid cell-phone has infinitely more utility. Adding color will be nice but it isn't a game changer and the nook ain't an i-pad. It's really just putting lipstick on a pig.

@ajrmd The nook uses a simplified version of the same os that is on your droid cell phone. A bit of hacking and most of the apps should work on a modified color nook. Now if it had a GPS chip, I would be in for one! That would give it some fun hack ability.
