Opera Mini 6 browser for iOS now on Apple App Store

By | May 24, 2011, 3:09pm PDT

Summary: iPad and iPhone users can now enjoy data traffic compression up to 90 percent when mobile Web surfing with the free Opera Mini 6 brower on iOS devices.

iPhone and iPad users who are unimpressed with their mobile web browser now have a lightweight alternative in the Opera Mini 6, the latest version to be available for download (it’s free!) from the Apple App Store this morning.

The Opera Mini claims to compress data traffic up to 90 percent, which means there should be less waiting for pages to load and more money in your pocket (if you are paying for access by the megabyte when roaming).

Because the browser is designed specifically for iOS devices, the browser will adapt content to best suit the iPhone and the iPad. For example, images on the iPhone will display at the highest resolution possible but the UI will adjust to accommodate the screen size, while content on the iPad will fit the larger display.
Other features include:

  • Smoother zooming and scrolling: Much faster and smoother panning and zooming that lets the user get all the way into the details of every page, in one smooth motion.
  • Integration with social media: Share buttons to share the love for a site to your friends on My Opera, Facebook, Twitter or vKontakte (Russian social network) right from the Opera Mini 6 browser.
  • New Look: Jazzed-up skin and redesigned Opera menus.
  • Download just once for all iOS devices: Opera Mini 6 browser is submitted as a single download for all iOS devices.

Visit m.opera.com or the Apple App Store to download the Opera Mini 6.

Is Opera Mini 6 that much speedier than other mobile browsers? Let us know in the comments.

@Alexander2011 A couple of things wrong with your post... One not everyone has an iPhone nor its it almost anyone - there are a LOT of people who have Android devices and BB devices... and that's not taking into account the feature phone owners. Two is that Firefox and Chrome will not work with the iPhone... unfortunately.
I think the compromised browser experience and they way it adapts content is still second fiddle to safari sadly...
@danblack

I've never used Opera but I am going to try it. There is something about Safari that I simply do not like. I just don't enjoy using it.
@ptorning
Tried it. Dislike it even more than Safari. Removed it.
