Pandigital got ahead of itself a bit with the speedy release of the Novel e-book reader, as the devices are being recalled already.

The Novel e-reader debuted back in May, and then it was released shortly thereafter in June at both Kohl’s and JCPenney’s. Both sites brought the cost down after initially having price tags that were higher than previously expected.

Now, according to The Digital Reader, Kohl’s has already recalled the 7-inch color device due to what appears to be a firmware fix rather than a hardware issue. Never fear as customers can still get a full refund. And now if you go over to the Novel product profile on Kohl’s website, you can’t even find the device listed anymore. JCPenney’s still got it available, however, but probably not for much longer if they’re smart about it.

No word on when the updated Novel will be back on the shelves. Have you bought a Pandigital Novel already, and if so, have you had problems with it?

@claramata: Being one of those who has received a raincheck from Kohls, I find it terribly frustrating and horribly wrong that CS continues to tell it's customers the unit will be out in another week, and then another week, and then another... After many a frustrating weeks, (I received my RC on the 9th of June, the day they were supposed to come out) I finally contacted Pandigital who says it will be a couple months till the release. Which is it??? Why is there extremely dismal CS coming from both companies?

The fir.m.ware is not updatable ????

I guess thats how they got the cost down.
@mrlinux Cant use the word firmware
@mrlinux Cant use the word firm.ware
@mrlinux Cant use the word firm.ware without it being reported as S.P.A.M.
It's updatable, but even with the update (available at pandigital.net under 'support') mine is still flaky. The touchscreen calibration is wonky and the wifi connection won't stay connected long enough to actually connect to any websites (including B&N). It's noticeably slow, which would be okay if it worked consistently. I'm optimistically holding onto mine, to see if they release a workable update soon.
Just got an email this a.m from Kohl's. They have canceled my order. I guess this "firmware" issue is bigger than first reported.
I received firm ware update and mine is working fine. I only have two complaints. I wish text was larger and it doesn't like wep protected wifi. Everything else is working fine.
There is a belief among those of us that got rainchecks from Kohl's, that the replacement units will be the black 2GB model rather that the original white 1GB model. If that's the case and all of the previously available discounts are applied, the cost would be under $110 before any applicable sales tax. Pretty sweet price if it performs as it should!
@jsamps0n I work at kohl's. According to my manager that's what's going to happen. Great thing about Kohl's: if it does turn out to be a giant misunderstanding, they'll still honor that promise (especially since people at multiple stores have been promised that).
