PayPal Mobile app for Android can deposit checks with just a photo

By | May 18, 2011, 11:10am PDT

Summary: Deposit a check to your PayPal account with a photo, not with a trip to the bank, with this PayPal Mobile app for Android devices.

PayPal Mobile app just launched on Android Marketplace, as reported by MobileCrunch earlier today.

iPhone and BlackBerry users have been enjoying the convenience of the PayPal app since last year, which has a neat little feature called “Mobile Check Capture”. Snap a photo of both the front and the back of the check with your phone’s camera, then watch as the amount on the check is automatically credited to your PayPal account. Voila! After 15 days, you can even shred that check, according to the press release announcing the iPhone app back in last October. The Mobile Check Capture function in the PayPal app is powered by BankServ, which incorporates Mitek Systems’ patented, market-leading mobile Remote Deposit Capture (RDC) technology.

I can’t wait till my bank incorporates this feature into its mobile app so I can have an alternative to rushing to a brick-and-mortar bank just to drop off a piece of paper and sign my name a couple of times.

Other functions include:

  • Save app onto a SD card to free up internal memory on your mobile device but initial reviews from users is that this is not functioning.
  • Find local businesses that accept PayPal payments.

This PayPal app is free for download on iTunes, BlackBerry App World, and now on Android Market too.

Always behind and always copying Apple... lame LOL
@Hasam1991 ...how does this have anything to do with Apple OR Android. This is entirely Paypal.
@Hasam1991

did you actually read the article? this is 100% Paypal
Because the Apple PayPal app has been able to do this for a while now...He's inferring that Android developers are always behind the Apple developers...

wow, cheques... I remember those

haha, I find it so funny that America is still using those things regularly enough that PayPal even bothered with that feature. Don't worry about working out with the banks in Australia to do it here... we won't use it.
@nathan@...

[...]Very funny but these things are very important if you want to make an mobile online transaction [..]

So what? Chase has had the feature on their app for quite some time. And who uses PayPal anyway? They're not a real bank. They can lock up your money at any time for any reason and you have no recourse other than to sue them.
@San-Dave This is true, I always deposit my checks into Chase for exactly this reason - They have had electronic check deposit for a while. I have probably e-deposited about 50 checks till now
