Presale for Sony 13.3" Vaio S Series starts today; $1,350 and up

By | May 25, 2011, 11:56am PDT

Summary: With flashy looks and great specs like the Intel i7 processor, solid state harddrive, dedicated AMD Radeon graphics card and memory and a Blu-ray drive, the Sony Vaio S Series is a standout.

Sony’s latest Vaio S Series 13.3″ ultra-portable laptop is simply a head-turner, inside and out. The burnished brown and gold case made of magnesium and aluminum materials alone is bound to stand out against a sea of monotone machines, but the S Series packs a lot more punch than just good looks.

The S Series laptop runs on the Intel® Core™ i7 processor with Turbo Boost Technology 2.0, has a dedicated AMD Radeon™ HD 6630 1GB Hybrid Graphics card and 1GB VRAM for HD capability, as well as dual channel solid state drive, which is about as good as it gets for a laptop. It wouldn’t be much of a Sony product without a Blu-ray drive; in fact, it also doubles as a DVD/CD player and writer on select models. Despite the laptop’s serious computing power, the internal battery can last 15-hours per charge according to its press release, and Sony also offers an optional “sheet battery” that can “attach it to the system without shutting down for maximum flexibility.”

This 13.3″ widescreen (1600×900) laptop is less than an inch thick ( 0.95″) and only weighs 3.8-pounds with the standard battery. In other words, the S Series performs like a desktop replacement but in a more portable form factor, which means it could be a good bet for style-conscious business travelers.

Presale for the Vaio S Series begins today on Sony.com. Pricing starts at $1,350 (depending on hardware components chosen); and the optional sheet battery starts at $150. (That said, there is an ad on the website that is offering the sheet battery for $99.99 if purchased with a S Series laptop by May 31.)

Let us know if the Vaio S Series as good as it looks.

@awkward hug that's with brightness turned way down and no WiFi or Bluetooth and processor running in low power mode - possible with ssd - swapping the hhd in ny iconia for an ssd doubled my battery life (and system throughput)
