How much has Sony's massive security breach cost the company? Billions? Trillions? Quadrillions?
While a number of outlandish numbers have been thrown around, few can doubt that Sony's bottom line will be significantly impacted by its recent plight. Less discussed, however, is how third-party companies that rely on Sony's services and console sales will be impacted by the ongoing outage.
In a post on the Capcom Unity forums, Capcom Senior Vice-President Christian Svensson notes that it's not only Sony that's being harmed by the recent attacks. "As an executive responsible for running a business, the resulting outage obviously costing [Capcom] hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in revenue that were planned for within our budget," he wrote. "These are funds we rely on to bring new games to market for our fans."
Svensson goes onto to argue that while the hackers' attempts at punishing Sony for its transgressions may have been effective, it's Sony's customers that will in the end be harmed the most. And judging by the ongoing PSN outage, it's hard to argue with him.
