RIP unlimited data: Tiered data plans coming to Verizon July 7th

Summary: The unlimited data plan continues its death march as Verizon prepares to introduce a set of tiered data plans. Heavy data users should run for the hills now.

Well, the news is finally here: Verizon will join the tiered data plan bandwagon next month.

According to DroidLife, Verizon will introduce the new plans starting on July 7th, the day after its 4G hotspot promo ends.

For $30 a month, customers will get 2GB of data, a clear pay-more-for-less deal in comparison to the unlimited deal it offers to new iPhone customers.  5GB and 10 GB plans wil go for $50 and $80, respectively. Verizon will also offer tethering plans, which cost $20 per extra 2GB. In all, the rates are a tad bit higher than the equivalent plans offered by AT&T.

Thankfully, subscribers currently under contract won't be affected by the changes just yet, as they are only aimed at new subscribers and contract renewals. There is no word on what Verizon plans on doing with its current unlimited subscribers, though it's likely the company will just force them to move to the new plans.
Of course, the news isn't exactly a surprise. Verizon CEO Fran Shammo teased last month that the changes would be coming, and would mostly be aimed at heavy data users.
So, heavy data users, how irked are you by the changes? Are they enough to send you over the edge and into Sprint or T-Mobile's welcoming and more-affordable arms?

    Ahhhhhh so it would seem that Verizon ended up with the same billing as AT&T.

    Sorry, had to get that out. All of the AT&T wireless haters used to throw that up in my face all the time.

        I guess that is a subjective view and it sure doesn't work in the suburban area where I live and this MAY be the thing that pushes us to a different carrier. Verizon KNOWS the coverage s*cks here but are apparently in no big hurry to do anything about it even though the towers have been approved. This may be the straw that breaks the camel's back because "NO VERIZON WE CAN'T HEAR YOU NOW AND WE WON'T PAY MORE FOR THE PRIVILEGE."

        Phone yes; data, heck no. It's documented that Verizon's network is on average 40% slower than AT&T's.

        @hoaxoner No, Verizon doesn't work better where I live than AT&T. The problems with Verizon just haven't been publicized the way they were with AT&T. I waited for iphone on Verizon so I could get unlimited data and now they intend to take that away when my contract comes up for renewal? I'm having a struggle paying the monthly rate that I have now which I already think is unreasonable. I will be looking for cheaper alternatives as better phones develop for other carriers.

        @hoaxoner <br><br>I'm sorry but $30 for 2GB is a RIP OFF! As if we don't pay enough already. How about paying more if you go over 5GB? <br><br>First they hook you with a cool phone then they take away the teet and leave you begging for more. We need better structure in the mobile market. If carrieres operated like the PC industry we'd be lightyears ahead of where we sit today.

        Speak for yourself, I've been with at&t for years and years and years (through no fewer than 3 different name changes) and never had a problem ever anywhere I went with the phone....

        @hoaxoner Soon that will apply to Tmobile as well when they join with att then it will be the independent phone services that have all the customers.

        @Bruizer I have not been able to use my Verizon for 1-1/2 years and neither have the other 5 phones on my line. Contract up in November and any of the providers will be better. Soooo I will go with the best deal even if I can't have an iPhone!!

        Better question is, with 5 lines, just pay the early termination fee or contest the contract that they are not fulfilling their end of the bargin.

        @Bruizer @jillijo44<br><br>I had a similar problem with Verizon years ago, and the problem with trying for the early termination then was that they added on hidden fees and penalties that made it as expensive as keeping the contract, I don't know if that's still the case, but I have never gone back.

        @BanjoKeith, lucky you. I'm in a rural area. Verizon showed me the coverage maps, said it would be great. They wouldn't give me a loaner phone to test though. I signed up, went home, and had "1 bar" and no connections. Took phone back to the store in an hour. They tried to charge me the activation fees anyhow. I told them "you do, and you'll see me in court."

        In the end, I still lost the numbers I was going to port over, and was charged the transfer-out fee by my previous carrier, whose coverage wasn't any better than Verizon's.

        Lots of promises, lots of lies.

        Never again.

      I will NEVER use AT&T. In 2003 I had a local supplier that was gobbled up the the AT&T corporation. They said that "retail customers" were not their future and that w/in ONE WEEK I would be discontinued.

      That made me decide to NEVER purchase anything from AT&T corporation again.

      BTW, the "hater" labeling sounds silly, unless you are maybe 12.

        @bush_lied_soldiers_died@... <br><br>You know what else sounds silly? The notion that the AT&T of 2011 is the same company as it was when we were growing up. Same name; completely different company; no continuity whatsoever. AT&T's name has saddled it with the bad reputation Ma Bell had when it had a monopoly until the early '80s.
