Roku cuts pricing on three media players; starts at $59.99

Summary: Roku is getting more competitive with its pricing on a trio of the company’s set-top boxes, and there will be a new streaming support feature on one of them in the coming months.

Roku is getting more competitive by slashing the pricing on a trio of the company’s set-top boxes, and there will be a new streaming support feature on one of them in the coming months.

The Roku SD, HD and HD-XR media players now retail for $59.99, $69.99 and $99.99 respectively. Each box includes Wi-Fi, and then connectivity options gradually increase with each set.

Additionally, owners of the HD-XR box can look forward to 1080p streaming support to be included in a free software update that will roll out later this year.

Price drops are always welcome news. But the timing of the announcement is leading many sites to speculate that this has something to do with Apple’s upcoming “music-related” press event and the revamped Apple TV/iTV set-top box. We won’t really know for sure, however, if Roku has anything to fear until September 1.
