Could HTC's 7-inch Android-based tablet be shipping as soon as next month. That's what is coming out of the rumor mill today.

According to Economic Daily (via Engadget), this unnamed slate will start shipping at the end of the first quarter, thus March. It will also be running on Gingerbread with the HTC Sense UI onboard too.

The timing seems good in terms of getting out there before it's too late. A tablet war is coming with Motorola Xoom going to launch first (in all likelihood), followed by Dell's Windows 7 tablet some time this year, and a second-generation iPad that you just know is going to stir everything up.

How interested are you in buying an Android 2.3-based tablet from HTC?

the oversized smartphone (45% of the ipad's screen real estate) that won't be able to update to a newer version of the os and comes with undeletable crapware preinstalled will sell for $800 and you have to order 3 month of 3g service to unlock wifi.

meanwhile with the introduction of the ipad2 for the very same $499, the original ipad16gbwifi drops to $399, killing all hopes of the copycats to have a poor pretend version of the ipad for a lower price.

You can actually hold a 7" tablet which is nice since it is suppose to be a tablet afterall. Ever notice all ipad users have to prop the ipad against their lap or hold with 2 hands and shift around a lot because their arms get tired. ipad is way too heavy.

And what does it say about the ipad if one year later there is already a replacement. Pretty much tells you ipad can't compete with the avalanche of tablets out by this summer. ipads will get drowned out the same way android phones is brushing iphones aside and apple had a 3 year head start on phones.

  • Zero interest, unless ...

Zero interest in it unless there is a solid commitment for a free update to Android 3.0 from HTC.

  • No

Since I want to be able to hold my tablet in one hand to use it for extended times, a 7" tablet is the only thing that makes sense, but my current one (Archos 70-250G) has 250GB of internal storage, holding all my music and a lot of movies, etc. Plus, it's Wifi only, so no pricey contracts. Plus it was cheap ($338). So not only would I not change to the HTC, if I had no tablet, I would still buy the A70-250G.

  • I love my droid phone...

but since droid does not have a netflix streaming app, and does not support the marvel digital comics, I will not buy another droid device until these two items are available and working. I do like the the google navigation on my phone. Best GPS ever, and since iPad and windows does not have the google navigation, I will not buy them either.

    Very little.
I like the 7" size (portability), however I am not a fan of HTC Sense UI. Make it clean like a Nexus One UI and offer confirmed update to 3.0 asap.
btw: wifi only - don't need the carrier as both my phones are also hotspots.

    Then I would be interested.....

@zenwalker: There will be plenty of very good tablets running stock Android 3.0 I(e.g. - Motorola Xoom). HTC Tablets aren't for you. Android + HTC Sense has literally made the company what it is today. They aren't going to get rid of it in a hurry.

I agree about wifi only. I've no interest in another contract, especially when my phone runs Android 2.2 anyway.

Wait until you can get a tablet right, just look at the Galaxy Tab and that means Honeycomb NOT Gingerbread.
