Rumor: Amazon's working on a pair of tablets, code-named "Coyote" and "Hollywood"

Summary: Rumors are circulating that Amazon is working not one but two tablets set to be released later this year.

Curious what the words "Coyote" and "Hollywood" have in common? According to one source, they are the code names of Amazon's upcoming tablets.

BGR reports via a tipster that Amazon plans to release both devices before the end of the year. Running on NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip, Coyote will be the less-advanced, cheaper device, while the quad-core NVIDIA T30-equipped Hollywood tablet will be far speedier. It's likely that these specifications differences will come with corresponding differences in screen size, though BGR's tipster didn't spill those details.

Speculation over Amazon's tablet plans has ramped up rapidly in recent months,  and especially since Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos essentially confirmed his company's tablet plans last week. Fortunately for fans of the Kindle, Bezos said that the company's future tablet would be offered in addition the Kindle rather than instead of it.

As for operating systems, speculation currently points to Android as Amazon's OS of choice. The move would make sense considering that Amazon launched its own Android App Store in March.

  • Great to have more competition, and of course really great to have a second

app store to keep Google in line.

  • Also worth noting: Amazon will NOT use a Microsoft OS, as, there are NO

viable Microsoft tablet operating systems. Well, ok, the most viable (WP7), Microsoft ain't a gonna let anybody use it on a tablet.

Is that you continue to bring in MS to every tablet story, almost like you're trying really hard to calm yourself down from the thought that they will have something in the future that will do the same to Android based tablets that they did to Linux based netbooks.

Also worth noting is that Amazon is using Google's own OS to destroy Google!

      Competition is great!

@Will Pharaoh Nobody is going to "destroy" anyone else. If anything, amazon's store is going to force everyone else to get serious about curating their store experience.

NVIDIA seems to be comfortably ahead in spinning out their chip and bring them to market, i am sure this will take a toll on Qualcomm revenues. With regards to the Quad core chipset, i do wonder whether Android and its apps are designed to take advantage of such rich hardware.

@nickswift498 Agreed, when you have four cores clocking at the same speed i guess framework and app level awareness can make a huge difference.
