Safari 5 quietly announced following WWDC 2010 keynote

By | June 8, 2010, 1:42am PDT

Summary: If you were too busy hyperventilating about the inevitable announcement of the iPhone 4 yesterday at WWDC 2010, you probably missed that Safari 5 was released too.

If you were too busy hyperventilating about the inevitable announcement of the iPhone 4 yesterday at WWDC 2010, you probably missed that Safari 5 was released too.

The newest version of Safari is primarily focused on performance and speed enhancements, including greater HTML5 support (predictable) and faster browsing speeds with the Nitro JavaScript engine.

Safari 5 does have some new features tacked on. Notably, Reader allows viewers to browse online articles without distractions by presenting it “instantly in one continuous, clutter-free view.” Essentially another window with ads and such dimmed out. Additionally, Apple sure is pushing their support for Bing by adding it to the Smart Search Field alongside Google and Yahoo! Search.

Developers will get access to programming for Safari 5, particularly in regards to the Extension tool in Reader.

The new version is available as a free download from Apple’s site now. Note that it is only compatible with Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8 or Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and later. PC users with Windows 7, Vista and XP SP2 can also head over for a free download too.

The Reader is great

I just tried it.
What a pleasure.
Do people really care about Safari? Even most Mac fanbois use Firefox or just about anything else. Only reason it is still around is because Apple wanted its own browser in the OS [after all you can't seell an OS without a browser].

My 2 year old G5 is outta luck

I think it's in poor form that Apple won't support an OS that they created not more than 28 months ago.

So instead, I loaded bootcamp and got it to work on my 10 year old XP operating system.

As for the HTML 5 gallery that I went to see in the first place... the video was good, but other than that, I was a bit disapointed. And the fact that Apple is using browser-sniffing to increase Safari downloads is pretty dirty IMO

People care, Gis Bun

I've got a dozen different browsers on the three systems (not including VMs) within easy reach of me, but I spend over 90% of my browsing time in Safari. It works (it's stable and current) and it has great usability. Try loading a few extensions into FF and see all the "eye candy" you get; Safari has some great extensions that don't get in your way nearly so much.

But it all depends on what you use a browser for. If you're one of the crowd that define themselves by the tools they've taken oaths of fealty to, you have my condolences.
