Samsung announces Galaxy S Wi-Fi 3.6, its answer to the iPod Touch

By | September 1, 2011, 11:14am PDT

Summary: Half phone, half something else, Samsung’s Galaxy S Wi-Fi 3.6 continues Apple’s effort to create a data-driven phone.

Samsung’s Galaxy S Wi-Fi 3.6 is an interesting little device. Lacking a SIM card, the “phone” relies completely on Wi-Fi connections to make calls and connect to the internet. If that sounds familiar it’s because that’s the same format followed by the iPod Touch, which Apple initially released in 2007.

Samsung’s device features a 3.6-inch screen (hence the name), 1GHz processor, and both front-facing and rear-facing cameras.

But can Samsung follow-up on the iPhone Touch’s success? It’s certainly possible, especially as Wi-Fi networks become more and more prevalent. It’s pretty likely we will see more devices like the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 3.6 in the future, and all of them will alter the idea of what we consider to be a “phone.” Is it simply the SIM card and ability to connect to a cellular network? The Galaxy S Wi-Fi 3.6 features neither of those things and yet we can pretty confidently call it a phone — even if using it as one is limited to VoIP programs like Google Talk.

Samsung will sell the 8GB version of the device for £149 ($240) and the 16GB model for £169 ($273). Expect it in the UK this October.

I can never understand why people have a problem with competition. As someone in the market for such a device, I am looking for choice. None of you part own Apple do you? Surely it's in everyone's interest that the Ipod has competition AND that we as the consumer have choice? Last, and by no means least, it prevents a monopoly on price by one company and at the very least keeps Apple on their toes. If anything, we need more respectable media tech companies like Samsung entering this android market WITHOUT the phone aspect.

You can't tell me that that isn't just an iPod touch running Android w/ Touchwiz.

Better than iPod Touch!

@branrules101 Except that it actually has a speaker where one would put their ear to use as a phone... The iPod Touch does not lend itself to being used as a phone without a headset (and can't do bluetooth either)!

Give it more storage and I'll seriously consider replacing my iPod Touch with it.
@branrules101 Agreed. What is with Samsung slavishly copying iOS devices?
many tried in that market without success. I am not sure why Samsung is trying that iPod Touch market area, but I am sure its sales will be mediocre.
Put a 3G radio in it and I'll buy it. Swap to VOIP calls entirely and get rid of phone costs. Data is the world.
This company Samsung is releasing a million variations of the same thing. I really don't see the point of this?
@dave95.

Perhaps a corporate evolutionary experiment. Put out many slightly different copies into the consumer wild and see which one survives?
hmmmm ipod touch which is already proven or samsung that is just coming into the market but ptice wise alsmot the same duhhhh ipod touch will still prevail, this needs to go under 100 to compete, another wasted device
@ricardo bilton, get someone to proof read your posts before making them public, PLEASE.

just two things which grate on me:
"Samsung?s Galaxy S Wi-Fi 3.6 continues Apple?s effort to create a data-driven phone."

Surely this is Samsung's product, not Apple's.

" follow-up on the iPhone Touch?s success"
IPOD touch not iPhone touch.

Not going to get into the Apple vs Samsung argument this time!

While this device is new, Samsung's line of Android powered portable media players is not. Did you guys forget the Samsung Galaxy S Wifi 4.0, the Samsung Galaxy S Wifi 5.0 (may also be the Samsung Galaxy Player 70, in South Korea), and the Samsung Galaxy Player 50? I also hope they release these in the US. But, then again, the reason they might not be releasing the 3 button variant of the Samsung Galaxy S and the Samsung Galaxy S II may be for fear of a lawsuit from Apple.
