Samsung is introducing Orion today, a new 1GHz Arm Cortex A9 dual-core processor intended for mobile computers.
Orion processors include a 32KB data cache and a matching 32KB instruction cache, along with a 1MB L2 cache for improving overall speed and performance.
The biggest boost will probably be seen when it comes to multimedia, as Samsung boasts that the Orion processors serve up “5 times the 3D graphics performance over the previous processor generation.” Users can expect full HD 1080p recording and 30fps video playback, along with support for two displays on the device while simultaneously screening to a third display (i.e. monitor, HDTV) thanks to the HDMI 1.3a interface.
There’s also a lot of room for customization with the Orion, as it can be paired up with several different storage and memory options.
Orion will first become available to “select customers” during the fourth quarter of 2010, and it will go into mass production during the first six months of next year. It should be very interesting to see which devices this powerful little guy ends up in.
