Samsung Galaxy S to be released in Asia in June; will get Android 2.2 upgrade

Samsung’s Galaxy S smartphone, announced at the CTIA Wireless show earlier this year, will finally be released in June, starting in Asia.

According to CNET Asia, the Galaxy S (a.k.a. i9000) will start at $1,098 SGD ($780 USD) - without a contract or subsidies, of course. Boasting a 4-inch Super AMOLED display that has gotten a lot of raves, the Galaxy S will first ship with Android 2.1 onboard, with promised upgrade to Android 2.2 Froyo at some unspecified date down the line.

While a release timeline hasn’t been posted in regards to the rest of the world yet, it does appear that the Galaxy S is up for pre-order in Germany already.

Yes Really...

People in Asia have a different buying behavior than here in the US. The telecoms there don't have a 'contract lock' policy and people are free to buy any handset depending on their purchasing power and use it with any telecom carrier. A phone like this will sell like hot cake for the upper middle class which has the capability to buy 1 (in some cases even 2) such phone(s) for a family of four. And yes Wolfie2K3 is right that the price will come down in about 6 months. It's just that we in the US have a different approach to telecom services- just like in everything else that we do!

Ok nice phone but reallY?

Ok its a great looking phone with great features but here is the issue prices have now left reality. Those who want a good function full phone can't pay over a $1000 for a cell phone just cant so they need to get these type phones to $299 and under without contracts and $99 with otherwise they price themselves out of the markets

Just because you can't afford the phone doesn't mean NO ONE else can either. This is obviously a high end phone that fetches a premium price. It's not a bargain basement phone for the masses. For what it's worth, look for the phone in 6 months or so and the price will likely drop to more reasonable levels.
