Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 4.0 and 5.0 PMPs launched internationally

Summary: Unveiled back around CES 2011 time, Samsung’s Galaxy Player is shipping abroad under a different moniker with an additional new model in tow.

Unveiled back around CES 2011 time, Samsung’s Galaxy Player is shipping abroad under a different moniker with an additional new model in tow.

The original Galaxy S WiFi 4.0 and the new Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 are relatively the same with primarily one exception: display sizes. Logically, the 4.0 sports a 4-inch WVGA Super Clear LCD panel, and the 5.0 hosts a 5-inch WVGA TFT LCD.

The Galaxy Player wasn’t met with a lot of excitement when announced as it is basically the same as the to the Galaxy S smartphone as the iPod touch is to the iPhone. But the iPod touch has found its place, so perhaps the Galaxy S portable media players will too.

Here’s a look at the shared specs:

  • Android 2.2 Froyo (Possible upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread)
  • 1GHz processor
  • 8GB, 16GB storage capacity options
  • microSD card slot (up to 32GB)
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi
  • GPS
  • 3.2-megapixel rear autofocus camera
  • VGA front-facing camera
  • Qik application for video chat
  • 720p HD video playback and DivX HD with support for multiple video codecs (i.e. MPEG4, H264, DivX, XviD, WMV)
  • Supported audio files: MP3, WMA9, Ogg, Flac, AAC
  • Accelerometer
  • Digital compass
  • Proximity and light sensors
  • Stereo speaker
  • Android Market access
  • 1,200mAh battery
  • Connectivity: USB 2.0, 3.5mm audio jack

The Galaxy S WiFi 4.0 will be first available in Russia and then rolled out to other countries, while the Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 will launch first in Switzerland. Still no word on a U.S. release date for either device just yet.

They should double the battery size

For a device like this to succeed, it should provide something special. Being a phone without a phone which seems totally idiotic to me isn't a big sales pitch. If they would add amazing battery life to it, it *would* be something special. The ability to make a lot of pictures, videos, and listen to music and watch films and the like while not having to worry about your battery (as opposed to regular smartphones) might make it an awesome device.
