In other Samsung news, an announcement has come from headquarters in Seoul that the tech giant has commenced mass production for the "world's first" transparent LCD panels.

The 22-inch, glass-like display will be available in black and white as well as in color with transparency rates set at over 20% and 15% respectively.

Some of the nitty-gritty (but useful) specs include both HDMI and USB connectivity, a 500:1 contrast ratio and a WSXGA+ (1,680 x 1,050) resolution. Samsung also promises that these monitors are far more energy-efficient using 90% less electricity compared to a conventional back-lit LCD panel.

Even though the transparent displays are being churned out right now, no word on pricing or availability just yet. These will likely be used for business-only purposes such as advertising and other signage, so pricing might subject to how many panels are ordered at once.

@fm-usa, Your eyesight must be a lot better than mine - I can't actually see anything at all. But then maybe that's because they're transparent!??

I did notice the date though...

  • I could see where this might be advantageous in some places...

... like vehicular HUDs not requiring a dash-top projector, but I have difficulty seeing an otherwise consumer or enterprise use unless edge-lighting can work as well as it does with the old glass-pane/grease-marker charts of old. With that in mind, it seems like the energy savings would be variable as edge lighting usually requires a pretty high-intensity light source or multiple light sources that would negate at least some of the savings.

I'd like to know more about this concept by Samsung.

@vulpine@... I agree 100%. I see no practical consumer use, save those who MUST HAVE anything different!

It would have been nice if Rachel King had told us why Samsung is making these things. What purpose will they serve?
