Want to really impress your guests at your holiday party this year? This should do the trick: Samsung's 70-inch "Ultra Definition" 3DTV.

Developed with oxide semiconductor TFT technology and a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, Samsung is touting the monster display as the "world's first" 70-inch ultra-def 240Hz LCD panel. It's difficult to think of any others like this, so they might just be right.

Unfortunately, no word on when this incredible piece of display technology will be available for consumers. Given that you need 3D glasses to fully make use of this Samsung panel, it is more likely to head for homes than commercial uses, at least until everyone starts walking around with 3D spectacles in their pockets.

• Does anyone own an upscaling Blu-Ray player?

a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels

That's a lot of pixels. Isn't Blu-Ray's native resolution only 1920x1080? In which case I can't see a lot of people having a suitable data source to connect to the thing.

@Zogg

PC can drive this. Plus it likely upscales anyway. I'd love a display like this for gaming. I don't see any native programming happening at that resolution for a while though.

• So not a 3DTV after all, then.

@LiquidLearner

PC can drive this.

Making it just one really expensive PC monitor? (That comes with a pair or two of silly glasses... ;-).)

@LiquidLearner : As Zagg said, it can be used as the mother of all computer monitors. Which means you can play 3D games as well. See www.mtbs3d.com. Sure nothing natively but will still come out very nice!

• YouTube QuadHD

@Zogg YouTube is already streaming content. One must remember that these are also targeted at Live Video Production applications, as one can preview 4 HD sources at once...not to mention it's application in Security Video.

Actually that would be an annoyance at a party:
"It's 3D!"
"It doesn't look it from here..."
"Oh, I have to put something 3D in... and... like this..."
"It's big, but maybe I'm not seeing the 3D...?"
"Oh, you need these special glasses..."
guest chuckles... "Oh, you aren't kidding?" takes glasses.
"OK, I see now. Kind of like that thing at Muppets theater at Disney MGM. Cool."
Hands back glasses.
walks away and whispers into wife's ear "Wait until I tell you what he had to pay for that thing... and you have to wear glasses to watch it! heheheheh... tell you on the way home. But go look - he's got glasses in his hand now, hurry up though."

Next guest....
"So, you have a new TV?"
Rinse, lather repeat.
etc.

Please god no, I have nightmares like that lol.
No thanks.

And what funny is a way.. some people who have trouble seeing some shades of blues and greens when mixed. Can not use the 3rd glasses. I am one of them. And even with the shudder glasses its still 2d and headache time

• Darn It!!!

I just bought the 63-inch Samsung. Well, I guess I can move it to the back bedroom where I moved the old 50-inch.

I have owned a 67 inch Samsung LED DLP 3D ready HDTV now for a couple of years. Let me tell you watching ESPN 3D sports and other 3D programing has been awesome. I had some neighbors giving me the rasberrys, when I first purchased my HDTV, about having to wear 3D glasses to watch 3D content. After most of these neighbors watched 3D sports using my 3D glasses they bought their own 3D glasses on Amazon. Now I can't get rid of them....but I don't have to buy any beer or sanks because the neighbors bring it all.

3D movies and gaming are also awesome to watch. Granted there are limited 3D movies currently but more are being developed.

I think most of the negative comments regarding large 3D HDTV's is that people are jealous.

Until such time where 3D TV's can encompass a viewer's entire field of vision (about 170 degrees), without glasses then this is just another feeble attempt at 3D.

Did you know Alfred Hitchcock's "Dial M for Murder" was shot in 3D back in 1954. You had do sit in the theater with glasses on, just like today. It's the same old gimmick with a new bow on the package.

Until prices on hi def, or large TV's come down, I doubt I'll own one, $1,000+ is too much cash, especially in this economy...

• RE: Samsung unveils 70-inch 'Ultra Definition' 240Hz 3DTV

I refuse to wear those stupid glasses :-) When they develop 3D without the use of glasses (already in the works) I'll buy. Until then I'll stick to 60" Plasma

Probably a waste of time, can get 73 or 82 inch mitsubishi I'm sure for 1/4 of whatever the price on this will be, and you'll impress a party more with 82 inches. The resolution isn't impressive, can barely stream 1980x1020 on wireless N as it stands. Only thing they could do to impress anymore is match mitsubishi prices, since I doubt it, get 82 inches!

• RE: Samsung unveils 70-inch 'Ultra Definition' 240Hz 3DTV

Why are they bothering to hype this if it still needs glasses and will pixelate HDTV from upscaling?
Get the febreze, there's a stinker in the making...
