Samsung has outed yet another device under the "Galaxy" umbrella, but don't expect this one to be exactly on par with the Galaxy S smartphone series.

The Galaxy Pro was introduced today at the Samsung SEA Forum in Singapore. Pricing and a launch plan for this Android 2.2-based handset weren't revealed just yet, but here are some of the specs that have been announced so far:

  • 2.8-inch touch screen
  • QWERTY keypad
  • 800MHz processor
  • TouchWiz user interface
  • 3-megapixel autofocus camera
  • Wi-Fi
  • Social Hub Premium

Looks like a decent enough option for the feature phone category. For a closer look at the Samsung Galaxy Pro, check out the video below:

  • Is this new trend to call basic-type of phones "Pro" smartphones?

    The subject.

      • It is still strange that "Pro" is worse than Galaxy without "Pro"

@mrlinux: that is what I meant.

@denisrs Pro usually means it has a QWERTY keyboard.

      • Ah, I see; thanks.

@RandomCake: looks strange though anyway since usual non-pro Galaxy is much better.

Cool finally manufacturers started realizing Android is for feature phones and not so smart like iPhone and Windows Phone 7. Having so much of openness and control by OEMs and carriers is not advantage in long run and Microsoft realized it and now Google will realize once it goes into downfall.

  • Galaxy "PRO"? YUCK !!!

It's not "pro", but it's cheap to make (and therefore, can sell in markets with less disposable income). The screen isn't multi-touch, it's just a stupid display -- and that's why a keyboard is necessary.

I will never buy a phone without the "Swype-To-Type" for silent typing. It's WAY faster, way more comfortable, and leaves the screen usable for other things when you're not typing characters. Here, the dumb-as* keyboard takes up half the space. (And that's not good.)

BTW, I *own* a Samsung Galaxy - the vastly superior Galaxy-S model.

It's still important to realize that there is a huge market for lower-end users. In fact, realistically I wouldn't say that there's more than 10% of true smart phone owners that really need their phones. Put differently, there's a very small percent of people who actually NEED to read, and answer mails no matter if they've popped out of the office for half an hour. Otherwise, you would probably find that the world will still turn even though 95% of the population only had tracfones.
